Acheampong itching for a return to the Stars

Ghana midfielder Frank Acheampong is patiently awaiting a recall after being left in the cold by Black Stars coach Avram Grant.

Acheampong has been overlooked by the Israeli after a nondescript performance in the friendly 1-0 win over Togo ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Mauritius last June.

“The national team is always there and he [Grant] is the coach,” Acheampong told Kasapa FM.

“We have so many players in Europe and even in the country. I can’t say much but I know my time will surely come. I know I will be back at the right time.

“I am always ready to come back because it is every player’s dream to wear the colours of his country.

“But we all can’t be in the national team at the same time. Hopefully, I will get my chance again.”

Acheampong made his national team bow at the age of 18 in an international friendly with China in 2012.

A year later, he played an instrumental role as Ghana picked bronze at the 2013 Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Although ignored by then Ghana manager Kwesi Appiah for Ghana’s disastrous 2014 Fifa World Cup campaign, the 22-year-old made the squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations under Grant.

However, the winger ended the tournament on a not-too-good note, missing his kick in the penalty shootout defeat to Cote d’Ivoire.

Acheampong boasts of 11 league appearances for Anderlecht in the Belgium topflight this season.
