AMA to demolish 30 brothels

Over 30 illegal wooden structures along the Korle-Gonno Beach, stretching from the Oceanic Beach Resort to Chorkor, on the Old Winneba Road in the Ablekuma South sub-metro in Accra, have been earmarked for demolition by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The structures, believed to be brothels, have allegedly been rented out to criminals who attack, terrorise and rape unsuspected visitors and residents along the Old Winneba Road at night.

According to the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the decision to demolish the structures follows a petition from the Chief of Korle-Gonno, Nii Tackie Owuowuo III, to the Korle District Police Station and copied to the Assembly.

He said the situation has generated some insecurity for residents, tourists, operators of beach resorts and holidaymakers, hence the move to demolish the brothels.

He said the petition also touched on illegal sand-winning and block manufacturing activities along the same stretch, mostly in the afternoon and at night, which is eroding the beach front.
