3,000 teachers to benefit from study leave with pay this year

Kumasi, June 23, GNA - Out of 6,702 teachers who applied for the 2008/2009 study leave with pay, the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council has given approval to 3,000 of them.

In a circular to all the Regional Directors of Education by the GES, Volta Region had the highest number of approved applicants of 530 followed by the Ashanti Region with 510 and Eastern Region, 404. The letter explained that the applicants should satisfy conditions in line with the GES study leave policy. The conditions stipulated that the teachers should have served for a minimum of three years after certification or since returning from the last approved course but must not be under bond unless serving in a deprived area.

Non-professional graduate teachers, the letter said, should have served for at least one year and are to embark on the post-graduate Diploma in Education course.

Members of the service who returned from secondment and are not under bond should have served for at least two years under bond before embarking on any course.

Members of the service who vacated their post and were reinstated should have served for at least five years before embarking on any course.

The letter gave the percentage quota allocation for the approved subjects and courses for grant of the study leave as 60 per cent for mathematics, English, science, French and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Twenty per cent was allocated for agricultural science, Ghanaian language, technical and vocational, laboratory technician, primary and basic education and early childhood education.
