Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for approximately 43 percent of all deaths in Ghana, the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has disclosed.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on July 14, 2026, she said the growing burden of chronic illnesses in the country has placed increasing pressure on the healthcare system.

"Data shows that 43 percent of all mortalities in Ghana are coming from Non-Communicable Diseases, mainly diabetes and high blood pressure. Most of the patients develop complications and when they develop complications, they need critical care or high-level specialised equipment", she stated.

Here are non-communicable diseases covered under MahamaCares

Dr Ayensu-Danquah explained that equipping teaching hospitals with modern specialised equipment is a key component of the MahamaCares initiative, which seeks to improve the country's capacity to diagnose and treat patients suffering from chronic diseases.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) otherwise known as the MahamaCares initiative seeks to mobilise sustainable financing for specialised medical care for people living with chronic NCDs.
