The Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Davis Ansah Opoku, MP, has called on Government to address the long-standing concerns of Allied Health Professionals regarding disparities in remuneration, career progression and conditions of service.

Speaking during Parliament’s consideration of the Public Accounts Committee’s Report on the Auditor-General’s Performance Audit on the Procurement and Maintenance of Medical Equipment in Teaching Hospitals, the MP noted that while significant attention is rightly given to the procurement of sophisticated medical equipment, equal attention must be paid to the professionals who operate and support these critical healthcare systems.

He referenced the Committee’s recommendation that Biomedical Health Personnel should receive the same level of institutional attention and motivation as other health professionals to improve morale and reduce internal tensions within the health sector.

According to Opoku, this principle should extend to the broader Allied Health workforce, including Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Physiotherapists, Radiographers, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists and other allied professionals who play indispensable roles in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.

“Modern medical equipment alone cannot improve healthcare outcomes. Behind every diagnosis, every laboratory result and every life-saving intervention are highly trained Allied Health Professionals whose expertise keeps our health system functioning,” he stated.

The MP observed that concerns over salary disparities and conditions of service continue to affect morale and retention within the Allied Health sector.

He therefore urged the Ministry of Health, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the relevant professional bodies to engage in structured dialogue aimed at reviewing salary harmonisation and career progression across the Allied Health professions.

He stressed that improving the welfare of Allied Health Professionals is not merely a labour issue but a strategic investment in the quality, efficiency and sustainability of healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Opoku concluded by stating that a resilient healthcare system depends not only on investment in infrastructure and equipment but also on motivated, fairly compensated and highly skilled healthcare professionals.
