The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely known as MahamaCares, has outlined the list of non-communicable diseases currently covered under its treatment support package.
Speaking on the government Accountability Series on May 11, 2026, the Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the health conditions currently supported include breast cancer, cervical cancer, and prostate cancer.
According to her, these non-communicable diseases form part of the initial rollout of the programme, which seeks to ease the financial burden on patients and improve access to specialised cancer care.

She further noted that the benefits package will be expanded, with additional disease conditions expected to be included by the end of the year as part of efforts to broaden national coverage for non-communicable diseases.
"The package includes breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and childhood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, soft tissue sarcomas, retinoblastoma, and nephroblastoma. Additional disease conditions will be included in the benefits package by the end of the year", she remarked.
Obuobia Darko-Opoku also disclosed that her outfit has made a strategic investment of GH¢ 36,234,475.00 into a specialist training programme aimed at strengthening Ghana’s specialist healthcare workforce and improving equitable access to specialised care nationwide.
She explained that through these partnerships, all regions of Ghana will benefit from expanded specialist training opportunities.
The Fund is aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals living with chronic diseases across the country.
It is designed to cover the cost of care and medication for non-communicable diseases not currently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), thereby complementing the scheme by supporting critical aspects of treatment for such conditions.
In addition, the initiative will invest in health infrastructure, medical equipment, specialist training, and research to enhance access to quality healthcare nationwide.
