President John Dramani Mahama has assured the public that reconstruction of the La General Hospital is expected to be completed and commissioned by November 2027.

During a working visit to the project site on Friday, April 24, 2026, he commended the contractor and project staff for the progress made so far, urging them to ensure timely delivery without further delays.

“Let me congratulate the contractor and the staff for a good job. The hospital is progressing quite well, and we want to make sure that it doesn't stall and that it continues and is delivered on due dates.

“The contractor assures us that by November 2027 we should be able to commission this hospital,” he stated.

President Mahama explained that the project is critical to improving healthcare delivery in Accra.

According to him, patients who previously used the facility have been forced to seek care at other major hospitals.

“Since it was demolished and was no longer serving patients, all the patients who used to come here now go to the Ridge Hospital or they go to LEKMA or to Korle Bu,” he noted.

President Mahama further noted that the new facility will significantly improve bed capacity in the capital.

“It is important that we get this hospital back in a better shape to provide an additional 160 beds. Currently people complain that when they have emergencies they are not able to get sufficient beds, so this hospital adds 160 more beds,” he explained.

President Mahama said the expansion of healthcare infrastructure is essential, given Accra’s rapid population growth and increasing demand for quality healthcare services.

“Accra is a fast-growing city and so the population demands quality health care and so we'll do everything possible to make sure that we complete this project so that we can afford good quality health care for our people,” he added.

The 160-bed facility, estimated at €50 million is expected to deliver a modern healthcare facility equipped with advanced medical technology.

The hospital, which was demolished in 2020 due to severe structural defects, stalled as a result of funding challenges linked to the previous government’s debt restructuring programme.
