A fetish priest has stormed an illegal mining site and destroyed some mining equipment following the pollution of a river in his community by illegal miners.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on September 7, 2026, the fetish priest is seen walking towards the mining site accompanied by a group of people.

He is later seen dismantling some of the illegal mining equipment with a stick.

The priest, who appeared angered by the impact of the mining activities on the river, is heard saying: “If not for the gravity of what they have done, I would never set off on her, hurry up and bring the equipment so I dismantle it.”

Illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, continues to wreak havoc on Ghana’s water bodies and environment despite efforts by successive governments to combat the menace.

The practice has contributed significantly to the pollution and degradation of several rivers and forest reserves across the country, prompting intensified efforts by the government and other stakeholders to combat the practice.

The fight is now led by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), a special-purpose unit under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources that coordinates and supports operations aimed at tackling illegal mining activities across Ghana.
