The National Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has outrightly rejected an apology from the Member of Parliament for New Juaben, Michael Okyere Baafi.
Another by-election looms as pressure mounts on NPP MP to resign
The lawmaker, in an interview with Asaase Radio on September 2, 2025, rendered an apology for making a promise to resign from his parliamentary role should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lose the Akwatia by-election.
Despite his admission to the fact that he may have overreacted with his comment, Okyere Baafi refused to resign.
“Maybe in hindsight, I went too far. I apologise to Ghana,” he told Asaaseradio.
However, in response to Okyere Baafi’s apology, Tanko Computer asserted that the lawmaker must honour his words and resign.
He said that the lawmaker’s failure to stand by his words could erode public trust in politicians.
“… We are going to Michael Baafi’s constituency. We are not accepting the apology. He must resign. If he doesn't resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously. We must be serious. They must hold us to our words.
“Whatever comes out of my mouth, they must take me serious. I can’t just stand here and make allegations. I can’t say certain things, and then within 24 hours [apologise],” he told journalists after Akwatia by-election results were declared on September 2, 2025.
Tanko Computer further disclosed that Okyere Baafi, prior to the election results declaration, maintained confidence in his party’s victory, even at the collation center.
“Do you know that he came in here when we were about to start the collation? He was beaming with smiles; telling me that ‘we are winning’, until I showed him the results on my phone, saying to him that ‘my friend, you have lost the election and I’m coming to your constituency for the by-election’. He then started sweating. That was the time he got to know that things had changed,” he said.
Tensions between NDC's Azorka and NPP's Chairman Buga heightens with new threats
Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on the lawmaker to fulfill his promise to resign.
