The Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, is facing pressure on social media to resign from his seat following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) loss in the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

The MP had earlier declared that he would step down if his party lost the election.

After the NPP's defeat, some social media users have descended on him, demanding that he honour his pledge and resign.

"Ghanaians: Hello Michael Okyere Baafi, the resignation no, how far?" a user questioned.

"Michael Okyere Baafi, please do the needful, else you'll destroy your reputation and integrity," another said.

"Absolutely, if Michael Okyere Baafi made that pledge publicly, stepping down would be the honourable thing to do. Otherwise, it just looks like empty words, and it undermines accountability. His resignation would also set a precedent that promises in politics aren't just for show," another added.

"Looks like Michael Okyere Baafi is putting his political future on the line. That's some high-stakes confidence or pressure!"

"Another by-election on the way at Michael Okyere Baafi's constituency cos Aka 9 p3. Herh, NPP paaaa nie!"

"Michael Okyere Baafi, Ghanaians are waiting for your resignation! Period!!"

Meanwhile, the MP has rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians following his party's loss in the Akwatia by-election.

Despite his pre-election pledge, Okyere Baafi apologised for his comments, saying, "Maybe, in hindsight, I went too far. I apologise to Ghana."

Almost every voter in Akwatia by-election received GH¢500 - 1,000 from NDC – Okyere Baafi alleges

He offered the apology during an interview with AsaasePA FM, even before the Electoral Commission officially declared the NDC's Bernard Baidoo as the winner of the election.

According to Okyere Baafi, he made the statement based on the excitement and support he claimed to have witnessed during the NPP's campaign in the constituency.

The Akwatia by-election, held on September 2, 2025, saw the NDC's Bernard Baidoo emerge victorious with 18,199 votes, while the NPP's Solomon Kwame Asumadu polled 15,235 votes.
