The Third National Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu Osman, has stated that the National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sofo Azorka, has no chance against him in a fair fight.

Speaking to Adom TV during the Akwatia parliamentary by-election on Tuesday, September 3, 2025, Masawudu, who was assaulted during a scuffle with Azorka and his associates, refuted being afraid of the NDC national officer.

“It’s all over social media; they are reporting about Alhaji Masawudu and Azorka, and we are northerners, both from Tamale. Once all of this is done, it is someone and his wife and children who will enjoy the victory that comes from the election, while you and I are fighting. It’s not as if I’m afraid of Azorka or anything. But he knows me; if we were left alone, he wouldn’t be able to stand against me for ten minutes.

“If it were a matter of strength and I were permitted, at your age, one punch from me would (sic) you, but I don’t want to be a murderer,” he added.

Alhaji Osman, popularly known as Chairman Bugabuga, was on the receiving end of a slap during a scuffle at the Akwatia Station during the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

Giving his account of the incident, the NPP Third Vice Chairman alleged that he was attacked by Chief Sofo Azorka and his escort while granting an interview on live television as part of his election monitoring duties.

In his interview with Adom TV, Masawudu, who had earlier claimed to have been attacked unprovoked, said the situation would have ended differently if the NDC vice chair had been the one who landed the slap on his face.

“I swear to God, if I were to fight Azorka in anger, with just one punch, he would fall down and never rise again. Just look at him; he struggles to breathe. Someone who is in his 60s, going on 70s, and still thinks like a child. All your veins are old. If I gave this man one hard punch, would he come back again? Why didn’t he slap me himself? He was the one facing me, so why wasn’t he the one who slapped me? If he had slapped me himself, he would be in hospital by now,” he boasted.

The Akwatia by-election was keenly contested between the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu and the NDC’s Bernard Baidoo, who emerged victorious with over 54% of the total valid votes.

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the late Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on July 7, 2025.
