If indeed there was a "well thought out" youth policy involving "extensive stakeholder engagement" with implementation plan to match, then one wonders why the incoming government did not review it with the view to its implementation.
Now, if what was implemented in 2010 by the Mills administration was taken from the original plan developed under the previous Kuffour government, what I would like to know is the degree of difference between the two. We have also just witnessed the latest government Youth policy implementation plan. How similar or different is this one from the one rolled out by president Atta-Mills in 2010 and how do these two compare with what the NPP government handed over to the NDC government?
What we need to avoid is duplication of effort and a repetition of good efforts previously made. What we need is continuity and a more bipartisan approach to national youth development efforts.
I agree with the NPP youth Organizer that if there is a broad-based and well developed policy and implementation plan, we should adopt and implement it rather than trying to 're-invent the wheel'.
What I fundamentally disagree with are his characterizations and conclusions. He too is blatantly playing politics with the issue of national youth development, and that is part of the problem. As long as we think that OUR approach is 'better' or the 'best' or 'only real deal', and as long as we 'sell' it as OUR own, then we have this sort of problem where each party tries to out-do the other and to claim ownership of a policy for political advantages.
This approach of turning policy issues into 'political footballs' to be kicked around is not only unhelpful, it is wasteful and in the end does not do any credit to any side of the political divide.
For Mr Awuku, I think he ought to realise that the NDC government not applying their existing policy and starting their own, is not tantamount to their 'neglect of the youth' or not caring about youth development. After all, they are also trying to implement a policy around the youth.
Shouldn't the likes of Awuku and his party and other parties be working with government to influence the necessary inputs that they may feel are lacking in what is on offer so that in the end, we can all be winners and above all, the youth of the country can gain from policies fashioned by ALL political parties rather than one or the other?
If not, you can be sure that if the NPP were in power they will do the exact, same thing - tear down whatever NDC has fashioned, and start all over again.
Now, you tell me: Is that the best way to run our country? and is that what we want? Is that what our Ghanaian youth really need?
Let's all stop playing cheap politics with the youth and their place in national development. Why can we not be critical without trying to score cheap political points on any issue?
