Seems like their real ultimate strategy is their so called agenda 2020. They want to turn Nana into damaged goods for 2016 because they know Alan can't win this time around. So they are laying the ground work for a Mahama victory, and then clear the path for 2020. This strategy is dead on arrival because Alan's career will end miserably in December 2014.
