I don't know these colleges but the issue is this. If all the athletes are currently in Ghana and training in ghana then a move to a facility in the US may be beneficial from the sporting angle. I say may because it really depends on several factors. First and foremost is the individual, 2) the coach 3)the competitiveness of the rest of the squad. Buildings don't make champions, people make champions. Also a move from a Ghana facility to a US facility will undoubtedly be an upgrade, however it does not suit all athletes, there is a period of adjustment, the culture shock, often these colleges are in racist areas and having to recruit black athletes to make themselves look good on paper re diversity but really they are not committed to black excellence. So just because you go to the US doesn't mean you're going to do better. IF HOWWEVER THE ISSUE IS TO GET A FREE US EDUCATION THEN GO FOR IT BUT DON'T KID US THAT THE ATHLETE IS GOING TOSOAR AND PRODUCE RESULTS. SPORTING EXCELLENCE DOES NOT COME FROM BUILDINGS AND IS A FINE TUNED UNDERSTANDING OF THE INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE, THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE REST OF THE SQUAD AND ACCESS TO COMPETITIVE CIRCUIT. So it's a bit of deceit to sell us this as a cureall. It's not. Also, are the athletes are in GHana or are some of them already in the US because it seems to me this could be another deceit whereby individuals, who may or may not be friends and family, are finding a way of getting a college education funded but again, if that's what it's about then be honest. Don't try to convince the people that somehow in 4 years time there'll be all this talent because in actual fact, what you're really doing here is peddling free college education not nurturing athletic prowess. Sometimes it goes hand in hand. Sometimes it's about pulling strings to get someone in just so they can get a free education. Laudable and nothing wrong with that but let's just be honest? that way no one gets disappointed in 4 years time when all the Ghanain athletes come last again?

Most Community colleges and Junior colleges have world class athletic facilities. Did you read in the story where it said they have secured scholarships for these athletes? These athletes were shopped around at those schools but their times were not good enough to go to those schools.
There are some high schools here in Texas with facilities that you can't even find in Ghana. Allen High school plays football in a new $60 million facility. Another high school near Allen, McKinney High school is building an $80 million football facility.
As a matter of fact, most of these Junior colleges prepare a lot of American Olympian athletes.

Are these perennial focused track schools or just regular non track schools that serve to simply offer an education like the ones prof dodoo has sent these ghathletes to? For example, Tyson gay and Jamaica Campbell brown both attended Barton cmmty colleges in Kansas, a well known track school. Where facilities, coaches and competitionn is top notch and prepares athletes to compete at top level. Athletes from such schools can go to commonwealth games and even olympics and either win a medal or do relatively well that what we seeing with our gh athletes in riff raff schools. you make good points but always with rudeness, profanity and bad temper and that is what lets you down. The point is there are many colleges, many facilities and many possibilities. However not all colleges and facilities are the same. in every sport there is a tendency for individual institutions to become hothouses and go to places for a patrticular discipline for a while at least. In other words, Ghana needs to have proper research and intellegince to figure out what is the optimum facility and venue and thentry to send the Ghanaian sthere rather than waste their time and everyone elses' time sending them to place where they won't get the proper environment to thrive. nurturing talent and athletes is acreative process that has to understand, human nature, environment, as well as the technivcal and physical aspects. Buildings don'e make champions. People make champions.

Ghanaians should be asking the GAA why it always places its athletes at the junior college level and not at four-year institutions. Who pays for the so-called scholars that the GAA touts. Are the scholarship provided by these junior colleges or GAA funds the scholars. At the junior college level where they have an open admission policy, only a few have the funds to offer athletic scholars to its students. What happens to the Ghanaian student-athletes when they graduate in two years and aren't able to get athletic scholarships to further their studies at four-year colleges? Martin Owusu-Antwi is luck to be going to a four-year college in the name of Coppin State University. I assume he is attending a college in the country, given his participation in the African university games.

I think historically there's just been a way of doing things and not explaining and then making it seem so great when in actual fact there are better ways of doing things if the approach is diagnositic and thorough. So the more transparent the better the results.

By the time there is a major competition, they will be burnt out. You can ask the Jamaicans. We need to ask help from the Jamaicans not the U.S to help us with programs that we can afford and fits our environment. absolutely. This idea that you just pluck people and send them off the US is not suitable for everyone and it usually backfinres. Of course they will improve but I think the criteria for what is being aimed for here is muddled. Is this about giving half a dozen people with sporting prowess the opportunity to do well through education and get an American degree hopefully and perhpas putting it to some use back in Ghana??? OR is it about developing Ghanaian sporting talent to perform well on the international stage (and hopefully manage to keep up their education for the day when their career stops). Unless you identify what the primary goal is, you can't make a sensible decision about the right path. Where are you trying to get to??? And at what cost? Who is paying the scholarships? the Government or the schools? Sport can and does change lives for the individual but it's a complex balancing act. Becoming a top athlete is not about buildings and the landmass you are on. It's about having a programme that fits the sport, the individual and the landscape of the opportunities available in that particular discipline bearing in mind, age and personal bests to be weighed up against the timeframe of when you want the athlete to peak and hit the mark. So I'm afraid I don't think, given the information released on this so far, that this is really going to work because it just seems a bit desperate and muddled.
