All you do is sit behind your computer and tell people what to do. Man you are so stupid. GAA put a lot of thought into this. Athletes who immediately qualify for Div 1 are going to D1 schools. Others are going to the best schools for their events at the junior college level so they can later transfer to D1 schools. Some of these JUCO schools have athletic programs that will put some D1 schools to shame.
Over 6 former athletes and many other non-sport individuals helped make this happen. Ghanaian universities already offer help to athletes. SOme are now working with GAA to help create more opportunities for their athletes. GAA vice president is actually a member of GUSA.
Where are the former athletes going to get the money from to setup clubs in Ghana? Or you think money grows on trees for people who are outside Ghana? Why can't those who are also in Ghana set up clubs? FOOLS like you help perpetuate the culture of helplessness i.e., only stuff from outside Ghana can make a change. Prof Dodoo does not need to go solicit people to come build tracks. Rather former athletes who want to help Ghana should go ahead and set up their enterprises/ athletics clubs. They don't need GAA to do that. ALways trying to find something wrong GAA even when they do something positive
You are such a low life.

thanks for expounding on the program. I believe in fair and balanced analysis. the problem we are trying to solve is that our local athletes do not have proper training facilities and the programs to help them develop, is that right? I believe that is right, now whose responsibility is it to put in place the necessary infrastructure and programs. I believe its the sports ministry. this initiative is shedding that responsibility onto American colleges. now this is not even an exchange program where they are going to spend a semester to receive training, and then go back to Ghana but rather they are totally being relocated to the U.S. now what do you suppose the long term effect is going to be. that they finish college and decide to go back to Ghana to help the sports ministry or they find a way to be permanent residence in the U.S.A. what some of us are saying is that we need to learn to solve our own problems and develop local capacities. the best thing that can come out of this program and I hope it does is that some of these students enroll in a sports major or something to do with sports/athletics management and medicine. earn respective degrees and certifications and liason with the Ghana sports ministry as consultants. but local capacity and infrastructure still needs to be built.

massa, why the insults? i chop ur woman? ghweb is here for all of us to share our input.so wat do u mean by.."All you do is sit behind your computer and tell people what to do".? are u high? gaa didnt put a lot of thoughjt into this bcos if they did. most of these gh athletes will be going to div 1 schools and not community colleges or div 3 schools. secondly, the olympics is less than 2yrs away. if an athlete goes to a community college. they will spend at least 2 yrs before they get the needed credits to transition to a div school. to get a scholarship, they must also improve on their track times and performance. therefore, how many of these gh athletes can even make the olympic minimum times to even qualify for rio olympics? if you want to be better, u must constantly train n compete with better div 1 athletes. thats all im saying.
moving forward, how many gh universities offer sport scholarships to playes and athletes in gh? even accra stadium has no tartan tracks. mordor, wen was the last times u heard of a inter university games in gh? yet,u hve the nerve to call me a fool?
u are asking me about money? if the govt of gh decides to prioritise. they will find the startup money for these fmr athletes to open athletic clubs. these clubs can also solicit money from private donors, cash from their athletes who win meets in other countries etc...the jamaicans, us etc are all doing it, so this isnt rocket science. the blueprint is already there, mordor. gh most succeesful athletes dont live in gh. they live outside. we want our fmr best athletes to mentor and coach our future athletes. wat gaa has done is okay, but they could do much much better. dont settle for mediocrity mordor. settle for excellence at all times.

NOT A BAD IDEA AT ALL
Women
The Lady Cougars only had two entries in the championship led by sophomore Kandace Thomas. Thomas blew away the field in the 100m prelims in 11.12 seconds, .22 faster than her nearest competitor. Thomas also set the new Gowans Stadium record in the process and posted the second fastest time in Barton history only to Veronica Campbell’s 11.00 mark set in 2003. Thomas then posted a Barton top ten mark of 24.27 in the 200m to qualify for the finals but unfortunately for Thomas and the Lady Cougars, Thomas was unable to compete in Saturday’s finals due to injury.
Another bright spot on Friday for the Lady Cougars was the performance of Larned’s Kaileigh Dietrich. Despite not qualify for the 1500m finals, Dietrich surpassed her personal best in the prelims by over seven seconds in running 5:23.07 to finish twentieth.
Men
Tayron Reyes shined for the Cougars in both the prelims and finals winning the 800m in 1:52.59. Also running on Barton’s 4X100m relay team replacing injured David Winters, Reyes and the Cougar team of Christian Black, Brien Berry, and Rahim Conwell placed seventh in 42.50. The Cougars had qualified for the finals placing sixth in Friday’s prelims running a 40.54.
In the sprints the Cougars’ Berry placed fifth in the 100m in 10.20 then improved to fourth in the 200m with a time of 20.80. Winters, who qualified for the 100m finals running a 10.27, ran injured in the 200m prelims which caused his withdrawal from the event and for the final round of the 100m. Conwell’s 10.87 in 100m prelims did not qualify for the finals and was later disqualified for a false start in the 200m.
The 800m relay team of David Berry, Jamal Henson, Tyler Lumpkin, and Reyes ran well below their season best to finish in thirteenth place at 8:18.65.
In the field, the Cougars lone entry David Simmons surpassed his personal best throws but was ruled out of bounds and failed to qualify for the finals.

You guys are all missing the point. This is great start but the question is are these athletes on good scholarships or they're just been sent out to hustle? These athletes are being sent at a time when it's very cold and it won't be easy for them to adjust right away. They have also their schooling to tackle. They have to understand and comprehend the american college educational system. That means they have to pass 12 or more credit hours to be eligible to even compete. Did GAA prepared them well enough for this? What happened to the previous 3 or 4 athletes that were sent to Neosho County Community College?

Again, if your DUMB ASS is trying to say sending them to Neosho was a disaster, then how come major D1 schools such as Alabama, A&M, Nebraska, Kansas etc are desperately trying to recruit Atsu Nyamadi and John Ampomah? GO and ask the athletes themselves.
Also get your facts straight. THE NAME IS SOLOMON ATOSONA. Again your dumb ass will not bother to find out what's up with him. He is not lost in the system. This an athlete who literally died in a motor cycle accident a month before he left Ghana. He even lost an eye. He was in a coma for 4 days as a result of brain swelling. I agree with some of the commentators that Ghana will loose in the end. its a rather short sighted, short term approach. it doesn't even begin to solve the problem. most of these athletes will not remain faithful/loyal to Ghana. At the end of day we all do what is in our best interest. these athletes will settle in the U.S especially after they find a Citizen to marry.
a long term sustainable solution is to develop a local capacity to train these talents.
one way is to designate sec. schools in Ghana starting with those that have historically done well in athletic competitions as sports secondary schools throughout the regions. the second step will then be to establish athletic departments in these sec. schools and adequately fund them to develop programs to train these athletes. the third step will be talent recruitment. we could start with a one or two sec schools in each of the regions and then go from them. its always good to catch talent whilst its still young so ideally we should even start from the primary schools and continue to university.

He should reduce his superfluous attention on football and make time to develop the other sports which are sinking. Commonwealth Games are coming and we must win something - at least a Gold, a Silver and some bronzes.

This is what we needed all along.Send them out to school and to train with the best, monitor their performance regularly, help them out when they need it and surely when the nation needs them, they will respond. That may also remove whatever inferiority complexes they may have during international competitions. Please do well to send more out and advise them to come home to help.It will be hard for them to naturalize as citizens of other nations when they know that Ghana helped them to educate themselves. And you who are benefiting from these scholarship need to reciprocate when we need you.

It is a shame that there has been many negative comments. As no funding has been given in recent years for Athletes, there was no other alternative than to send these promising young people abroad. if countries like UK can do this, why does Ghanaians feel that the athletes would be better off in their own country. More support is needed at corporate level, since the government seems unable to offer funding. Football is not sufficient to sustain a country and Ghanaians do need to invest time and money in the promising young athletes whether boys or girls. Whoever has achieved this recent development, needs to be congratulated on a good step forward and providing that support is continued to be given to them when they in USA, it can only lead to good things - let us all get behind this development instead of criticising . Additionally when these athletes careers are over, they will have an education to fall back on.
