Am elected MP who was sworn into Parliament under the constitution speaking this way? The very constitution that has created the Police Service and mandated it to carry out its functions? Either the MP does not understand the Constitution or he is deliberately sabotaging it. Let this statement come from any one else, but not an MP. It shocks me to the marrow that some NPP members do not even know that the Police Service in its current structure was created by their own Dr Busia in 1970 through the passing of the Police Service Act by the parliament of the Progress Party Govt of Dr Busia. No wonder some Ghanaians are doubting the background of some of these MPs.

The question is, is there even any security in Ghana for one to even go to the extent of trusting the police? According to numerous surveys and reports conducted by institutions which monitor governance issues across African countries including Ghana, the police service according to Ghanaians is one of the most corrupt institutions that cannot be trusted ands ranks pretty high with the executive, being the NDC administration. And coupled with the fact that, recruitment into the police service is a very opaque process, which has been allowed to be infiltrated by NDC party footsoldiers compromising the professionalism of the police service and rendering it basically, as a de facto unofficial enforcement wing through intimidation, killings, violence of the party in power, there is no gain saying the fact, the police service cannot be trusted. The surveys and reports are clear on that.
Indeed, recently, an NPP member of Parliament was assassinated and the circumstances, even when the police were called in, shows a serious lack of appreciation of the unfolding events by the police. The assassin managed to kill the MP whilst the police were according to them, waiting outside the gates of the MP for the assassin to come out.
But for the vigilance of a phone repairer, who alerted the police when the assassin went to unlock the stolen phones from the MP's bedroom, he would not have been found, as it has happened on countless occasions.
For the police service to earn the trust of Ghanaians to provide security not just for political party flagbearers, MP's, Ministers, officials of state institutions etc, etc but every single Ghanaian citizen, the police service must look deep within itself and start fixing their image, stem and branch, because it is in the damnable pits.
