The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the diplomatic community over what it describes as the weaponisation of state security agencies against members of the party by the Mahama administration.

A delegation of party executives and supporters presented the petition while expressing concern over the treatment of Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Speaking during the presentation of the petition, on May 19, 2026, shared by The 197News, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, criticised the continued detention of Abronye DC, describing the situation as unfair and politically motivated.

According to him, remanding a person indefinitely without clear timelines is unacceptable in a democratic state.

“To say that you are going to be remanded until the matter is determined, it's never done. It can only happen in a kangaroo or a banana state,” he said.

He further accused President John Dramani Mahama of allegedly allowing state institutions to be used against political opponents.

“Your Excellency, there is no reason whatsoever for the president to be watching over this and be instructing state institutions to deal with issues like this,” the MP fumed.

The lawmaker also argued that Abronye DC’s rights were being violated because the offences against him are bailable.

“We have basic human rights, which one includes bailable offenses that you have the right to be bailed. The judge in this matter is not allowing for any of this and it keeps going on,” he indicated.

“Your Excellency, we decided to show a lot of reverence to the diplomatic community. So, we decided to come with this respected number of men and women, not to come with any form of demonstration, not to trigger any form of problems,” the lawmaker continued.

He added that the delegation was acting on the instructions of the party leadership, including former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“The general secretary, the minority leader and the president in waiting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia sent us to come and do this peacefully. Please, your excellency, we need action,” he disclosed.

The MP also demanded the immediate release of Abronye DC and accused the judge handling the matter of prejudging the case.

“The first action is to release Abronye DC. In fact, this court has not given us any daytime for him to reappear, for him to be released. This is how the abuse is ongoing, the onslaught. And this is a judge who has predetermined the matter before the matter is even dealt with,” the MP demanded.

He warned that continued actions against opposition members could heighten political tensions in the country.

“Your Excellency, the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggle. When this goes on for more than necessary time, we are not going to sit down and watch,” he warned.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib further alleged that the Mahama administration was reviving what he described as a “culture of silence.”

“If it is about killing us, I have told my family, if you see that your father has not come home, understand that this is the kind of business we are in. That this government headed by President John Dramani Mahama does not understand that the criminal libel law was repealed and that he's brought in the state that we call the culture of silence,” he concluded.
