Convention People's Party (CPP) has praised the government’s swift response to recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians and other African nationals in South Africa.

The party specifically commended President John Dramani Mahama for the strategic approach of engaging local authorities and the immediate evacuation of over 300 Ghanaians affected by the violence.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh on May 14, 2026, the CPP’s Acting National Chairman, Moses Amadu Yahaya, also lauded the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, for engaging South African authorities to ensure the safety of Ghanaian citizens.

The party welcomed assurances from South Africa’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, and the Police Ministry that the attacks would be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.

Describing the incidents as a direct affront to the ideals of African unity and solidarity, the CPP condemned all forms of violence, intimidation and discrimination against foreign nationals.

“As the party of Kwame Nkrumah, who dedicated his life to the liberation of South Africa and the unity of Africa, the CPP condemns in the strongest terms all acts of violence against our brothers and sisters in South Africa,” the report said.

The party recalled Ghana’s historic support for the anti-apartheid struggle, including assistance to the African National Congress and other liberation movements.

The CPP urged the South African government to guarantee the safety of all Ghanaians in the country, including students, traders and professionals, and called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals seen in viral videos attacking foreign nationals.

It also appealed to the African Union to activate its Continental Early Warning System and convene an emergency session on xenophobia, warning that such acts threaten Africa’s development agenda.

The party advised Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain calm, avoid confrontation, and report any incidents to the South African Police Service and Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.

According to the CPP, the attacks highlight the urgent need for African countries to strengthen cooperation and deepen continental unity in line with the principles of Pan-Africanism.
