The NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament has hired a lawyer to handle the case of detained Asante Akim North MP, Kwame Ohene Frimpong.
Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, said the caucus secured a Ghanaian lawyer based in Amsterdam to provide legal support after Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026.
“We have gotten a lawyer for him, a Ghanaian-based in Amsterdam who practices at The Hague. He is the one dealing with the legal issues to see what we can do,” Dafeamekpor told 3FM on May 14, 2026.

He said the legal team only recently gained access to the warrant, which was issued on April 26, 2026.
“The lawyers are just informing me that they have seen the warrant, and it was issued on April 26. So even as a sovereign nation, I doubt if we have been informed in any way,” he added.
Dafeamekpor said he spoke with Frimpong, the lawyers, and constituency officials on May 12, 2026.

The MP denied any wrongdoing and said he had not done anything to attract US attention.
“I asked him that, since becoming an MP, whether he has done anything so untoward to attract the attention of the American government this way, he said no,” Dafeamekpor stated.
“And I asked him in his previous life before coming to Parliament, and he said no, he had not done anything like that to attract or even be cautioned,” he added.
The Majority Chief Whip said the Attorney General has been tasked to provide a legal opinion on the implications of the MP travelling on a diplomatic passport, even though the trip was private.
“Even though it is a private trip, he is travelling on his diplomatic passport, so you know there are implications in terms of the statutes and all of that,” he said.
Parliament confirmed the detention on May 12, 2026, with Parliament’s Clerk, Ebenezer Djietror, saying the Speaker and House leadership are in touch with Ghana’s mission at The Hague.
Dafeamekpor said the MP is in good condition while legal teams work “frantically” on next steps towards resolving the matter.
