The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that lawyers for detained Member of Parliament, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, have successfully filed a bail application in a Dutch court.

Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, Dafeamekpor said the application was submitted on Tuesday and that lawyers are pushing for an expedited hearing, raising expectations that the MP could soon have an opportunity to argue for his temporary release.

“So, the lawyers have successfully filed for his bail today. And so we are praying that they will be given a hearing sometime within the week,” he said.

Frimpong is currently being held in custody in Amsterdam as legal proceedings continue before a Dutch court. While details surrounding the case remain before the courts, his detention has drawn significant attention in Ghana, with parliamentary leaders and government officials closely following developments.

According to Dafeamekpor, efforts to support the MP have extended beyond Parliament.

He said the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands, has been actively engaged in ensuring he receives the necessary assistance.

“The government has also supported. The Foreign Minister has been able to coordinate the work of our ambassador to The Hague to support and offer him every assistance,” he stated.

The Majority Chief Whip noted that Parliament’s leadership has maintained contact with both the MP’s family and his legal representatives throughout the ordeal, describing the situation as one that requires patience and solidarity.

He appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm and keep the legislator and his family in their thoughts as they await the outcome of the bail application.

“We think that he will prevail with the bail application,” he added.

Dafeamekpor argued that granting bail would allow the MP to continue carrying out his responsibilities while investigations and court proceedings continue.

“He should have his interim freedom to be able to do his work. He will not evaporate and go anywhere,” he stated.

For the MP’s family and constituents, the coming days are expected to be crucial as they await the court’s decision on whether he will be granted temporary freedom pending the determination of the case.
