Without an effective campaign about sanitation Ghana will never defeat Cholera. It should be on radios and prime time TV to eradicate Cholera once and for all.

Thanks, Ghana Public Health Assoc. for that timely heads up on an eminent Cholera outbreak. Before, I go on further, I wish to emphasize that no amount of public education will change the sanitation problem in the country, if the government sits aloof, and sanitation has been left in private hands. Health of the people should be the primary responsibility of any government. So far as we have inflated parliament with more than 200 Parliamentarians for a small country like Ghana and the president enjoying fat salaries and riding expensive cars to the detriment of the people with the living conditions growing worse and worse, the health of the people will be on the line.

The government has to come up with an aggressive plan to solve the sanitation problem in Accra. Various stakeholders should be involved and garner support at the grassroots. It is not just enough to bring awareness and education to the people but government should put in place the infrastructure needed to sustain good sanitation and basic hygiene. For example good drinking water, efficient sewage disposal,(no Zoom lion), comprehensive long term plan for the Circle-odorna area to avoid flooding, distribution of durable covered trash containers to every household, effective and supervised monthly clean-up exercise, non-involvement of any citizenry punishable by law. Every household provided with good toilet facility, with payment by instalment monthly. A lot of public places of convenience scattered around will cause widespread of diseases. I could remember when we were young we have sanitary inspectors called "town council" come around every neighborhood to inspect our source of drinking water and good sanitations, these are all gone. There should be a comprehensive roundtable talk with all stakeholders to formulate a sustainable preventive measures to curb this surmountable disease called cholera. It does not make any economical sense to waste money treating preventable diseases. This is the question I keep asking over the years -Ghana is at least 60years old, why does every village in Ghana not have access to good and clean drinking water and we continue to be plagued with water borne diseases. This is to say the least. We need selfless individuals who will serve the country, not the other way round. I think the salaries of State officials like Parliamentarians should be at a minimum, so we will see, who are really willing to serve the country. I see many state officials as self seeking people who are using their political will to amass wealth and have turned political positions as a money making venture. In my best estimation, we should have only 50 Parliamentarians, 5 for each region, with less attractive salaries, then we CAN distinquish between the selfish and the selfless. There is too much waste in the system, we need money to build good hospitals, schools, provide good drinking water to all Ghanaians to produce healthy people ready to take their destiny into their own hands. I will be back.
