The herbalist "explained that the anti-oxidant properties contained in the extraction at daily dose increase the intracellular level thereby enhancing the penetration of light through the retina to improve the visual acuity"
This science as lifted from the herbalist's pronouncement is not supported by the pathophysiologies of glaucoma or cataract.
As you correctly wrote glaucoma has everything to do with the blockage of flow and hence the increase in intraocular pressure as a result of blockage.
And btw neither glaucoma or cataract patients need to use glasses to improve vision as mentioned by the herbalist. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is probably a duck. I smell foul.

Refraction lens are used for Refractive correction in the eyes which includes a wide range of treatment options. It is as commonplace as a prescription for glasses or contact lenses. It may also take the form of cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with the implantation of a monofocal lens.
So my point is that eye glasses which is one form of refractive correction is not a cure for glaucoma or cataract. Refraction lens help improve eye acuity. Eye problems that require refractive lens correction include myopia, presbyopia, hypermetropia etc. These eye issues are not caused by glaucoma but can be found in glaucoma patients. So the refraction lens will be prescribed in glaucoma patients to help them with reading, seeing near or far objects with the aim of improving the patients overall visual acuity.
To avoid the subject of refractive
correction in patients with glaucoma
is to ignore reality. Instead, doctors
should recognize that glaucoma patients want to see well and take a proactive approach regarding their visual acuity. In doing so, we are ensuring the oversight of their total vision care.

AMD can impair central vision. People who are affected by AMD may have problems reading, driving, and performing activities that require clear central vision. In severe cases, AMD makes close work like threading a needle or reading a book difficult or impossible. When the macula does not function correctly, we experience blurriness or darkness in the center of our vision. Although AMD reduces vision in the central part of the retina, it does not tend to affect peripheral vision. AMD alone does not usually result in total blindness. Most people continue to have some useful vision and are able to live independently. AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in our senior population.
Stages of Age-related Macular Degeneration

These drugs inhibit the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels and are the first treatments that have been shown to improve vision in some eyes rather than simply slowing the rate of vision loss. VEGF inhibitors are delivered through tiny injections in the eye periodically.
Other treatments include laser treatments and photodynamic therapy. These treatments are designed to seal the leaking blood vessels, halting the damage they can inflict upon the retina. These treatments may be effective in slowing the progression of wet macular degeneration and are sometimes used in combination with VEGF inhibitors. Research is underway to find new and more effective treatments for this condition.

Please, please, please, can the folks at KNUST just spare a moment to investigate this story. A few hours doing that will tell whether this is just another hoax by a snake oil seller or the real McCoy. Whichever way, it is doing good to the society. Or, am I asking too much? After all, they might need a research and book allowance to be able to do that investigation and Mahama might just have a fit or throw a tantrum when asked to dole out again! I tend to agree with you. One thing that puts me off about some of these herbalists is that they can cure all the diseases known to man but common diseases that can easily be treated by modern medicine are killing Ghanaians.

If this is true, Ghanaians should hold this man in high esteem so that this man is lured to somewhere else in the world and killed just as when a Ghanaian herbalist from the Brong Ahafo region was killed in Japan some years ago, in the 1980s, when he told the world that he had found a cure for HIV/AIDS. Cruzeilo, makes a great point. If indeed this so-called discovery "can decrease the production of the aq humor or increase it outflow, then it will be very useful" but that is not the case according to the science included in the article by the herbalist:
The herbalist "explained that the anti-oxidant properties contained in the extraction at daily dose increase the intracellular level thereby enhancing the penetration of light through the retina to improve the visual acuity"
This science as lifted from the herbalist's pronouncement is not supported by the pathophysiologies of glaucoma or cataract.
As you correctly wrote glaucoma has everything to do with the blockage of flow and hence the increase in intraocular pressure as a result of blockage.
And btw neither glaucoma or cataract patients need to use glasses to improve vision as mentioned by the herbalist. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is probably a duck. I smell foul.

Kasapreko Kwabena, I am not sure about your educational background but anyone with a medical background will know that this so-called discovery is a hoax just by reading the science included in his article and even non-medical folks can research Drug development, Glaucoma and Cataract to learn more and not go by pronouncement by a herbalist who may not have a clue about the pathophysiology of the aforementioned diseases in order to come out with a cure.
My comments are meant to educate people like you(Kasapreko Kwabena).
Once again I like readers to note that glaucoma is a disease of increased intraocular pressure in the eye which destroys the optic nerve and hence vision. Cataract on the other hand is the clouding of the normal clear lens of the eye which distorts vision. Drug development is a long process and a difficult one. No one should wake up one morning and shout that they discovered a cure for glaucoma and cataract.
"Intracellular light" penetration in the eye as mentioned by the herbalist has nothing to do with glaucoma or cataracts so his so-called discovery that helps "intracellular light" in the eye has no place in the cure of glaucoma or cataracts. Both diseases are well studied and documented over the years. If a herbalist wants to play medical science he/she should do a better research before making any pronouncements to the world.
There may be lots of ignorant folks in our part of the world but the internet is a world forum, do not assume that only Ghanaians are reading this so-called discovery.
On Ghanaian radio stations and TV there are all kind claims of medical discoveries and cures for Hep B, DM, Glaucoma, 'sexual weakness"(whatever that means). If all these claims were true then Ghana should be a world class center for medical tourism and flourish development in the field of medicine.
Mr Kasapreko Kwabena, do not be ignorant, you have the internet at your disposal, research, read, talk to your medical professional friends(if you have any) and learn more about what goes into drug development.
I am not sure what you mean by "envious of this guys so-called discovery". There is no discovery.
Oh! and please do not hide behind the internet and insult others. This is just a forum for discussions.
