I have been a nurse for the past 18 year. I do understand what it takes to be a nurse. The nurses in this case completely failed to honor the code why the choose the profession. This is purely negligence, malpractice, incompetence, and sheer wickedness. They must be fired asap. We need nurses who have the heart and care for the patient they so dream to care for. Another sore point in Ghanaian nursing. Period.

Time and time again, issues of this nature have always brought nursing in Ghana to the lowest abyss. Regardless of the fact that Ghana's health care system is bad, the economy is failing, dumsor and whatever... as a nurse you have the requisite education and experience to provide first aid to a any patient who comes through our doors. Where is the care and compassion these nurses professed when they voiced the Nightingales pledge. I do understand what it takes to be a nurse. The nurses in this case completely failed to help a dying patient. This is purely negligence, malpractice, incompetence, and sheer wickedness. Ghana needs nurses who have the heart, a sense of compassion and a duty to care for the patient. Honestly, this is another sore point in Ghanaian nursing. Period. I hope the Ghana Health Service and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana would take whatever action necessary to address this situation. Thank you!

JD Nuree, you are very ignorant. Maybe you are one of those types of nurses. One of the first things any health professional learns is first aid. at least they should be seen to be doing something like trying to stop the bleeding. This is not an isolated case. Our nurses in particular are very callous. Wait till you get a case like that yourself or relative. Our health care system has been hi-jacked by the GMA. We train so few doctors that they are a mafia. They have made it so difficult to do medicine in this country, yet a lot of them are just book doctors. What a mess of a country.

Stop the bleed, hydrate the patient. Just do what your level of competence requires of you, period. Again, Amasaman is not a level 1, 2 or 3 trauma center..all they the nurses need to do was to provide first aid, stability and the transport to the next level of care. Enough of the blame on the system. These nurses should have first and foremost provided stability and first aid. if you understand what true nursing means...then these nurses at Amasaman failed!!!!!

I am not surprise of such gross negligence and dereliction of duty at the government hospital at Amasaman. It's a daily menu fed to patients who patronised the service of the hospital. Most residences around Amasaman rather preferred attend Nsawan hospital instead. I had a bad experience at the hospital when I took my wife to deliver at the hospital. Some of the health workers don't just care about the plight of patients. It's pathetic!

This is very true of them. I have personally witnessed one such incident where the staff refused even to give a card let alone offer First Aid for a young boy with acute stomach ache rushed in by the mother. The reason was there was no doctor at that moment. In another incident results of blood tests on my own brother conducted early morning whiles on admission was released late afternoon even because the staff was involved in a meeting after which there was a change over of staff. In fact the blood level was vary low that they were surprised he still survived, however it took more than one hour for the ward nurses to obtain a clearance from a doctor for me to go and look for the blood elsewhere in the night. It seems the nurses only have to act no matter the situation on doctors instructions and that is then cause of all this.

Even a lay person like me have gone on to make inquiries regarding these two case.
1.Accident victim checked in around 7:45.
2.There was no available bed.
3. The nurses available at the emergency unit were one supervisor and a student nurse.
4. The supervisor was immediately called and attended to the patient. First checking BP and Vital stats.
5. The BP was too low and Supervisor called in a doctor.
6. Doctor confirmed and decided patient should be referred to 37 military hospital.
8.True. There was no ambulance available. The patient was given two IV's and a third was was put on him before a taxi was availed to send him to 37 millitary hospital.
9. The student nurse accompanied the mpatient in the taxi administring the iv(drip).
all these happened within 15 minutes.
The patient died on his way to 37.
Definately, someone was not happy with the way the man was treated on the floor, the taxi taking him to 37 and the student nurse accompanying him. But can we blame the nurses for these?

I was there with my mum. The place is being run like a mmechanics' shop without any standard operating procedures. The Administrator of the hospital don't care about anything going on at the hospital. Nurses and other hospital personnel uses try and error basically in daily activities over there. The hospital needs administrative managers to run the place. Doctors and Nurses at that hospital are killing patients more then the diseases that took them there in the first place. I was a hospital administrator for 13 years I know what I am saying. the hospital needs business procedures reengineering.

Reading the story, it brings to the fore the system failures we have inherent in the operation of a clinic or a health center.
Does the hospital have any protocol on how to take care of an emergency especially when a doctor is not available. Does the nurses know what to do in that situation. Certainly if the center has one doctor you do not expect the doctor to be there 24hrs and so in that case how do you deal with emergency and referrals. This situations are way more complex than the active accusation of the nurses on call. It is a system failure which makes it hard to hold anybody accountable. In any civilized country there are systems to announce if an emergency is coming to a hospital and have the hospital prepared before the patient even gets there to ensure swift care.
37 military hospital is no exception it is the same overthere. Have we forgotten how the late Mills died. We need to change and learn to organize our hospitals better.
