I personally know the story of a US trained Ghanaian ER physician who came to Ghana to practice but had to leave out of frustration, because there's was virtually absolutely nothing to support his expertise and training to make the necessary impact as compared to the US, so he had to leave, and leaving he did.
He is currently working in the US, happy and satisfied because his services are appreciated, rewarded, and the set up to promote continued advancement in his area of training, education, research, new technology, innovation that ensures improved health outcomes for his patients is being met.
The society he finds himself believes in advancing the frontiers of healthcare delivery and making it one of the best, if not the best in the world, giving true meaning to the popular cliché of a healthy country being a wealthy nation.
However in our part of the world and in Ghana specifically, the healthcare system effectively, has collapsed, saddled with financial constraints, lack of motivation, lack of resources, mismanagement, constant agitation between health professionals and gov't over conditions of service, obsolete technology, just a sickening mess which affects the most vulnerable in society, who unfortunately form about 99.99% of the population.
The members of the NDC gov't and their hangers-on at the least sign of a headache fly out at taxpayer expense to seek the best healthcare out there whilst the majority suffer. That is the sad case of healthcare delivery in the country under this NDC gov't, a directionless, incompetent and corrupt gov't with no focus on anything except to loot.
There are more healthcare personnel leaving this country than at any other time, because the Mahama NDC gov't lacks the ability to govern and deliver. On every health metric from patient to doctor ratios, success rates of health interventions, hospitalizations, standards of care, drug availability etc, within the entire spectrum of healthcare delivery right from diagnosis, interventions, therapy(various aspects), transitions of care, outcomes etc, etc the indices
are just terrible and very, very poor, indeed horrifying is to say the least.
Clearly the gov't is overwhelmed and with a get rich quick at all cost through any means necessary mentality using the political process under this NDC gov't, the lift we dare say is very, very heavy in terms of our socioeconomic growth and development undergirded by a healthy society.
This initiative needs to be applauded and special thanks to UMich and Prof. P. Donkor(is it KATH?)for supporting this program because God knows Ghanaians need it. It could not have come at an opportune time.

If these doctors who toil to save lives are not paid even their allowances which is due them, which doctor will like to work under such condition. When politicians are getting their pay and allowances without fail and doctors are not, what disservice is that. The NDC government should sit up other than that we are in trouble as a nation. Time will tell.
