Mr. Bennie is to be commended on his efforts to increase awareness and to educate the public and healthcare providers on the dangers that defective medical devices pose to life and limb in Ghana. Two sources of medical device defects are product design and manufacturing. Some are led to think these are the only sources of danger and reports to authorities will solve allthe problems. I think misuse/abuse of medical devices are common in labs and operating rooms than we are willing to believe: short shelf-life due to improper storage, poor maintenance, poor quality assurance programs and failure to follow manufacturer’s instructions.
