This ignorant medical doctor did not tell us whether the 8000 figure is for those suffering from chronic, acute or advanced stage of kidney problem. Many Ghanaians are suffering from chronic renal problems including Prez Mahama of Ghana. The number could be 4 out of 10 Ghanaians. The fact is that the onset of chronic kidney problem is not easy to detect. Most cases are detected at the advanced stage and that is where orthodox medical practitioners mostly come in. Symptoms of chronic kidney problem includes frequent fevers which some in Ghana mistaken it to be typhoid, upper respiratory congestion which a doctor at the UCC Medical School ignorantly associated with lung infection forgetting that the lung is also an excretory organ and so if the kidney is under performing the lung assists, itchy skin after bathing cold water, chronic body and mouth odour, greasy or oily sweat, frequent high blood pressure which sometimes lead to depression, etc.
Major causes of chronic kidney disease in Ghana include 1. Hard Drugs including alcohol, tobacco, excessive intake of orthodox medicine, etc. 2. Excessive intake of caffeinated products like coffee, Tea, Chocolate, kola nuts, Ganja, etc. 3. Too much salt in diet, Eg in Kobi, momoni, Totobi, etc and the excessive use of Potash, ie Kanwa by our Northern folks. 4. Bad combination of foods like groundnut soup+meat+fish, beans+egg+meat+ Fish, Meat+ Fish, Fried egg+sardine 5. Infants less than two years consuming cow milk.
SOLUTION
Consume healthy foods with daily adequate intake of fresh ginger and garlic and adequate amount of water
So you see, our medical doctors, who are mostly university graduates, are not helping us. I only have HND yet I know better.

It's pathetic that a guy with a mediocre level of education will foolishly criticize a qualified medical officer who knows what he is talking about . I know a lot of you folks do not have health insurance or in simple terms ,the means to acquire adequate medical and preventive care from recognized medical clinics , but that should not give the audacity to insult talking heads who are duty bound to advise you. The gist of the Doctor's speech was 'the dangers of self medication' !! So ignorant morons ! Please find the means to have a simple blood and urine test to fish out the underlying medical problems in thier embryonic stages before they become a DEATH WARRANT .
