Yeboah, don't be deceived by the Harmattan.I was expecting an article on this serious disease to be given more exposure and to be a bit more comprehensive, however short. Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and can be serious. In 2009 CSM killed 562 out of the 9,086 cases in an outbreak in Nigeria. Although fatal Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is most often treatable with antibiotics. Even with rapid diagnosis 5-10% of patients typically die within 24-48 hours of symptom onset.
Dry weather, dusty winds, cold nights, and large population living in overcrowded conditions leave people vulnerable to respiratory infections and are among some of the reasons behind the Meningitis Belt’s high burden meningococcal disease.
I also expect the article to mention the most common symptoms so people can be alerted in time to seek medical assistance. These symptoms include: stiff neck, high fever, rash, headache, vomiting, confusion and nose bleed.
I hope this will help our brothers and sisters to be more aware of this disease.
