The practise where newly sworn-in doctors called house officers are left to experiment with serious medical and obstetric cases while the medical officers, specialists and consultants are away must stop. The Ghana health service must ensure that in the referral hospitals there is at least a specialist on duty 24 hours in three shifts to supervise the newly sworn-in doctors at all times.
