Thank you very much Prof.Delle for educating us. What I have observed personally is that the Ghanaian community encourages bleaching which is quite unfortunate. Fair people are usually referred as ''obroni'', meaning white and even encouraged to bleach whenever their complexion darkens a bit. Besides this, most people tend to prefer fair spouses to dark ones. Some dark people are described as dirty because they have dark skin. Others go to the extent of prescribing body creams for people to ''brighten'' their complexion and mothers now bleach their young children. It is my fervent prayer that the Ministry Of Health (MOH) organizes programs to educate the general public on the harmful effects of bleaching and the need to appreciate ourselves just as God created us. Again, the Ghana Education Service (GES)could teach this important topic in schools in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other stakeholders. The nation should take action in reducing this menace now since the next generation of Ghanaians may spend a huge amount of our resources in curing cancers and other bleaching related diseases if something is not done about this.

Somehow, I have advocated that the "slavery mentality" need to be changed from the top. Remember, "say it loud, I am black and proud" started with James Brown. Even though he was not following his own messages and kept on changing his face, the people got the message.But when our actresses and singers are doing the same, this low-self esteem, self-hating slave mentality needs to start from the top. The Ministry of Health could do very little because the FM Radios and TVs are all into politics and stupidity rather than health, education and economics.
This is a battle...hopefully, something is done about it.

It's very common among the Francophone men especially from Congo & Zaire etc, since ever too till now.
In the early 70s, men whom were bleaching themselves in Tema & Accra were all male hairdressers working in ladies hairdressing salons (I know some of them personally). By that time this trend was limited to them & within their circles only.
I believe that 'inferior complex' plays a role which brings one's mind to breach himself!!!!
