Smoking and alcoholism do NOT cause tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the tuberculosis bacteria. I hope the GNA misreported what the disease control officer said.

Alcohol abuse has been linked to immunosuppression, chronic unemployment, inability to access healthcare, homelessness, sleeping in overcrowded tenements, and the possibility of being infected with an infectious disease such as TB. Research after research in India and Russia prove that the mortality rate for smokers who abuse alcohol are several times higher than those who do not smoke or drink.
Then there is the likelihood that smoking may increase the risk of developing active TB through different biological mechanisms, including the impaired clearance of secretions on the tracheobronchial mucosal surface, reduced phagocytotic function of pulmonary alveolar macrophages, decreased production of tumor necrosis factor in pulmonary macrophages, and increased iron overload in pulmonary macrophages. The pulmonary macrophages are the body's primary defence mechanism to contain M. tuberculosis.
Reduce the risk factors; don't smoke and don't drink. You will save your life and someone else's, too.

May be, Mr. Gyau was referring to smoking and alcoholism as risk factors for TB contraction and the GNA reporter misreported it. Unless Mr. Gyau actually got it all wrong!!!!!

True they are detrimental to your health but don't tell people lies in order to convince them. Be truthful. Smoking or drinking does not cause TB. It increases your risk so is sleeping or living in a crowded place. If smoking and drinking as he put it causes TB then I can also say shopping at Makola, Kejetia or Kaneshie causes TB as well. But you and I know that is factually not true but its a risk because those places are crowded and people cough and sneeze indiscriminately.
Mr Infection control officer please give the right info.

I think it is time we give all to support TB patient than to look down upon them.
When we show love to them;it will rather encourage them to openly seek medical attention.
