Doctors in the most developed countries such as Germany are also not paid well in relation to the long education they have to go through. That is why even in the most developed countries doctors go on strike.

In 2006, more than 22.000 doctors stopped work, calling for better working conditions and wage increases of 30 percent.Up to 50 000 doctors at 600 municipal hospitals across the country decided to go on strike this month, after members of the German doctors' union, the Marburger Bund (MB), voted overwhelmingly on Jan 10 to stage a walkout. And, although they admit that operations and other treatments for some patients will be disrupted, they say the industrial action is the only way they can get local authorities to make an “acceptable” offer to meet their demands.

You don`t need a medical genius such as Prof. Kwabena Frimpon Boateng. Well, the germans would love to take him back to Germany, where he was trained and was among the first ones to teach students in heart transplantation.
You and your NDC people call lecturers, medical doctors and any people who go on strike as riff raffs. I guess its easy to insult people unless you are not concerned yourself. Even your Nkrumah went on the streets to fight for the right to strike. But when he came to power, he made strikes illegal and let people who went on strike to be arrested.

You won't be the first carer to quit his job. I have friends who left for UK and USA being doctors from Ghana and they are not working as doctors. Get your facts right. If you entered the profession for the financial gains, then quit your job and start a private hospital. After all, that is what they're all doing. They never show up for work and leave patients waiting for 6hrs because of locum. If you want to talk about the length of the course, do you know that MBChB is not the same as a PhD? it is called a first degree.

In case you dont know, if you study in Germany its quite different from the rest of europe. Medical science, law and education (teaching) are the longest courses you can study in Germany.
The first two years of medical school consist of the so-called pre-clinical classes. During this time, the students are instructed in the basic sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc.) and must pass a federal medical exam (Erster Abschnitt der ärztlichen Prüfung), administered nationally. Upon completion, the students advance to the clinical stage, where they receive three years of training and education in the clinical subjects (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pharmacology, pathology, etc.). The last year of medical school consists of the so-called "practical year" (Praktisches Jahr, PJ). Students are required to spend three four-month clerkships, two of them in a hospital (internal medicine and surgery) as well as one elective, which can be one of the other clinical subjects (e. g. family medicine, anesthesiology, neurology, pediatrics, radiology etc.).
After at least six years of medical school, the students graduate with a final federal medical exam (Zweiter Abschnitt der ärztlichen Prüfung). Graduates receive the license to practice medicine and the professional title of physician (Arzt). The academic degree Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med., an equivalent to the MD)is awarded if the graduate has, in addition, successfully completed a scientific study and dissertation. Many medical students opt to perform their thesis during their studies at medical school, but only a fraction of them is able to finish the dissertation-process during their studies. If physicians wish to open up a doctor's office, they are required to further complete residency in order to fulfill the federal requirements of becoming Facharzt (specialized in a certain field of medicine like internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics etc.)
Ghanaians are not serious! They expect people to deliver high quality services, but dont want them to be paid adequately. What else can you work after many years of studies in medical science? Maybe, you can become a pharmacist. Indeed some of my friends did that and now they are earning well. In fact, one of my uncles was the first black african to open a pharmacy store in the USA.

Absolute nonesense! Most of my people have been working in Ghana, USA and Germany. Mistakes happen everywhere. Maybe he had some other problems or diseases. Drinking suffiecent water is a necessity, but will certainly not cause any harm. This is exactly right you dont get paid for study time. Thats why you should be paid adequately after study time. This is only fair, since people who learnt a job without University education (i.e. vocational courses in combination with training in a company) get paid allowances during their education. No wonder, to many attending university in Germany is no more attractive. Why would you go to University, only to have worse job opportunities and even if you get a job, you almost paid the same salary as someone who did not attend university at all? In Germany medical doctors working at hospitals are not being paid for any services they render. There are fixed salaries, depending on your position. Its only the people on top who earn well. But the chances of getting lucrative positions further down the line are steadily waning. That's why many trainee doctors end their careers before they even start. Only just over half of students starting medical degrees will end up as practicing doctors in Germany. Many become bureaucrats in the health service, find jobs in industry or emigrate.
In everyday hospital life, the interests of the patients come last -- that is seen as the job of the head physician who "rules like a monarch." Once a friend of mine,alerted his superior to a mistake in how a patient was being treated, he was treated as if he had insulted royalty. He was yelled at. For the following three weeks his name did not appear on any operating timetables, and doctors who don't operate during their training fail to qualify for exams.He worked 60 hours a week, did mammoth shifts around the clock, fulfilled the demands of his superiors. Meanwhile even doctors who are not working in hospitals but run their own office, can`t subscribe much of the high quality medicine, as the health insurance companies only pay for poorer drugs, which are less costive.
While most medical staff work like dogs, the profits are pocketed by the few. Doctors' salaries have fallen steadily in the last three years. Many a young clinic doctor gets paid less than a long-serving nurse even if he puts in 70 hours a week. Because ever fewer people are applying for such jobs there's a growing shortage of doctors in parts of the country. Many rural doctors are complaining that they can't find successors to hand their surgeries to.
The situation is disastrous for public health and a debacle for the economy. If the trend of recent years continues with only 7,000 of 12,000 medical students completing their training over €1 billion of university costs will have been wasted. The deficit will continue to rise the more qualified doctors decide to earn their money abroad.

Ghanaian doctors are the worse performing doctors in the world (check the stats) looking at the number of preventable deaths that occur in our hospitals every year. They are untouchable due to the inefficiency of our ' SIKAdecious' block headed leaders. Never in my long life has I ever heard that a doctor's licence has ever been revoked, even though most are inefficient, corrupt and fraudulent. They use public facilities to do their private business, we all know that. They creat artificial money making season for themselves by going on strike for as long as the can, forcing patients to visit the private clinics were these doctors owe or work. I'm sure they are clapping for themselves now . They should go somewhere else and educate themselves on how things are done professionally and stop looking for BLOOD MONEY.

They are overpaid. The strike boils down to the fact that others are taking salaries similar or very close tho theirs.They want to earn more than they work for. I am not a party fanatic and will not be one. I get paid as a professional irrespective of what party wins an election and that can not be changed. Because of their selfish attitudes, they make it very difficult for people who are trained abroad to come and work in the Ghana Health Service. They also undermine any qualification and doctor who is not from UST or Legon. Ask the Cuban and Russian trained doctors and they will educate you on this.

For the first time in my life I FULLY support the strike that doctors are embarking on. why should lazy and incompetent people like our parliamentarians (some of who do not make any contributions or utter a word) in parliament receive a rent allowance of ¢ 50,000.00 for JUST TWO YEARS whiles doctors struggle under sometimes very hard conditions to make sure lives are saved. For those of you criticizing the doctors go and visit some of our hospitals and clinics, doctors do not even go on break let alone go home to be with their families. our doctors are suffering and these issues should be addressed well. They complain of very bad and outmoded facilities and absolutely nothing is done about them.

The cleaner in the hospital, the electrician, and every other worker in the hospital is as important as you are. Let there be an emergency and the ambulance driver says he is on strike, what will you do? Let there be death and the mortuaryman say he is on strike, will you sit or sleep by the corpse? Let all teachers go on strike and let's see how many doctors will be produced. Everybody matters in his or her small way, so let no one hold the other to ransom because you think you are indispensible. There can be no justification for a direct act which neglects ordinary sick Ghanaians to die. MP's might have been overpaid but that is no excuse not to save lives and cure illnesses as much as possible
