Many households rely on the freezer to preserve meat for weeks or even months, especially when meat is bought in bulk.
But while freezing can keep meat from spoiling for a long time, it does not mean that a piece of meat will remain fresh and tasty forever.
Southern Living says that beef, chicken or fish you forgot at the back of the freezer may still be technically safe after a long period, but its taste, texture and quality could have deteriorated significantly.
Here is how long you should ideally keep different types of meat in the freezer.
Freezing slows spoilage
Freezing works by stopping the growth of microorganisms that cause food to spoil and can lead to food poisoning.
However, freezing does not completely protect meat from changes in quality.
The longer meat remains frozen, the greater the chance that its fat will develop an unpleasant, rancid flavour, particularly if the meat is poorly wrapped and exposed to air.

This is why a steak that has spent years in the freezer may be safe but still taste nothing like a freshly frozen steak.
Watch out for freezer burn
Freezer burn is another major problem associated with storing meat for too long.
It happens when moisture escapes from frozen food and the exposed areas become dry and discoloured.
Meat affected by freezer burn may develop greyish or leathery patches and can become chewy, tough or mealy after cooking.
The good news is that freezer burn itself does not necessarily make meat unsafe to eat. The bigger problem is that it can seriously affect the quality, appearance and taste.
Beef can last up to a year
Fresh beef generally has a relatively long freezer life.
When properly packaged and kept at the correct temperature, fresh beef can remain in good quality for about six to 12 months.
But that does not mean you should simply freeze beef and forget about it.

For the best taste and texture, it is advisable to label the package with the date it was frozen and use it within the recommended period.
Chicken can last 12 months
Whole chickens and turkeys can generally be kept in the freezer for up to 12 months.
Chicken pieces, however, have a shorter recommended storage period of about nine months.
Proper packaging is particularly important because poultry can quickly develop freezer burn when exposed to air.
Pork has a shorter window
Pork chops and roasts can generally remain in the freezer for about four to six months.
Uncooked, uncured ham can last about six months.
Processed meats have an even shorter recommended freezer life. Bacon, for example, is best used within one month, while sausage should ideally be consumed within one to two months.
Ground meat does not last as long
If you regularly buy minced or ground meat, it is worth paying attention to how long it remains frozen.
Hamburger and other ground meats are generally best kept for about three to four months.
Because ground meat has a larger surface area exposed to air, its quality can deteriorate more quickly than that of larger cuts of meat.
Fish needs extra care
Fish can have a shorter freezer life depending on its type.
Oily or fatty fish should generally be used within two to three months.
Lean or white fish can last about four to eight months.
The higher fat content in oily fish makes it more susceptible to developing rancid flavours during extended storage.
What about shrimp and shellfish?
Shrimp and crawfish can remain in good condition for approximately six to 18 months, depending on storage conditions.
Other shellfish generally have a much shorter recommended storage period of around two to four months.
As with other frozen foods, proper wrapping and a consistently cold freezer are essential.
Don't freeze meat that's already going bad
One mistake people make is putting meat in the freezer when it is already close to spoiling.
Freezing does not reverse spoilage.
If meat is already deteriorating before it is frozen, placing it in the freezer will not restore its freshness or improve its quality.
For better results, freeze raw meat while it is still fresh, preferably soon after purchasing it if you do not plan to use it within its refrigerated storage period.

Wrap it properly
How you package meat can make a major difference.
Do not simply throw a supermarket tray of meat into the freezer and expect it to remain in good condition for months.
For better protection, wrap the original packaging with an additional layer of plastic wrap or aluminium foil.
You can then place the package inside a freezer-safe zip-top bag and squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing it.
Less air means less moisture loss and a lower risk of freezer burn.
Keep the freezer cold
For proper storage, the freezer should be maintained at 0°F (-18°C) or colder.
Avoid repeatedly allowing frozen meat to warm up and refreeze, as temperature changes can contribute to deterioration in quality.
Where possible, keep meat towards the back of the freezer, where the temperature is more stable.
Label everything
If you cannot remember when you bought or froze a particular package of meat, you are not alone.
A simple label can save you from playing the guessing game months later.
Write the month and year on every package before putting it into the freezer.
Also, keep older packages towards the front and newer ones towards the back. This makes it easier to use the oldest meat first and reduce food waste.
The freezer is not a time machine
Freezing is an excellent way to extend the shelf life of meat, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that meat will remain perfect forever.
A properly frozen piece of meat can remain safe for a long time, but quality will eventually decline.
So before cooking that forgotten package at the back of your freezer, check how long it has been there, look for signs of freezer burn and consider whether it was properly packaged.
Freeze meat while it is fresh, keep your freezer at the right temperature, package it properly and keep track of how long it has been stored.
