The Northern Region has recorded its first birth through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), bringing new hope to couples who have struggled with infertility and previously had to travel to Accra or Kumasi to access the treatment.

For years, couples in northern Ghana seeking IVF services have had to make the long journey to other parts of the country, often adding significant financial and emotional costs to an already challenging experience.

The birth of the baby in Tamale is a major development in access to fertility treatment in the region and offers a glimpse of hope for couples who want to seek assisted reproductive care.

According to a post shared on Facebook by GTV on August 16, 2026, the baby was born at a private clinic in Tamale after one couple had spent years waiting to have a child.

The post said the couple had gone through months of preparation before finally welcoming their baby through IVF.

For couples dealing with infertility, IVF can offer another pathway to parenthood when natural conception has proved difficult or unsuccessful.

The availability of such treatment in the North could therefore make a significant difference to couples who may previously have had to make repeated trips to Accra or Kumasi for consultations, procedures and follow-up care.
