The Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service (NAS), has handed over 30 ambulances to National Security for refurbishment and possible integration into the national emergency response fleet.

The ambulances, which are stationed at the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp in Accra, will undergo further technical assessments to determine their roadworthiness and the extent of refurbishment required before they can be deployed.

The development follows legal clearance from the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, authorising the Ministry of Health to retrieve and assess the vehicles for potential operational use.

In a post shared on Facebook on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the National Ambulance Service said an initial assessment had been conducted by the State Transport Company (STC), with further technical checks expected to guide the refurbishment process.

“The ambulances will undergo technical assessments and refurbishment to determine their roadworthiness and the extent of work required before they can be deployed,” the statement said.

The keys to the 30 ambulances were formally presented to a representative of National Security, which will oversee the refurbishment process.

Following the refurbishment, the vehicles will be subjected to the necessary technical and roadworthiness assessments before being cleared for operational deployment.

Present at the handover were the Legal Adviser to the Minister for Health, Lawyer Abubakar Mutiu-Rahaman; Board Chairman of the National Ambulance Service, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II (Bremahene); Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr (Med) George Kojo Owusu; as well as representatives of National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The initiative forms part of government’s efforts to recover and restore available emergency response assets to strengthen the operational capacity of the National Ambulance Service.

It added that once refurbished and certified for use, the ambulances are expected to boost the national emergency fleet and improve access to timely pre-hospital emergency care across the country.
