The Savannah Regional Health Directorate has confirmed the missing of a newborn from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga on June 10, 2026.

In a statement dated June 11, 2026, the Directorate said, following the incident, a search conducted at the facility proved futile.

It subsequently reported the incident to the police.

"Following the report of the incident, an immediate search was conducted within the facility. However, the efforts did not yield any results, and the matter was subsequently reported to the East Gonja District Police Command for investigation," the statement said.

The Regional Health Directorate extended its condolences to the affected family.

"The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the parents and family of the baby during this difficult period and assures them of its full support as investigations continue," the statement read.

It also reassured the public about safety protocols and appealed to the public to volunteer any information about the missing baby.

"The Directorate wishes to reassure the public that the safety, security, and well-being of patients, newborns and all clients of the health service remain a top priority of the Ghana Health Service."

"The Regional Health Directorate therefore appeals to members of the public who may have any information regarding the whereabouts of the missing baby to contact the nearest police station or the Savannah Regional Health Directorate," the release added.

Meanwhile, the Tamale Circuit Court has remanded two midwives at the facility into police custody for one week in connection with the incident.
