Being black or dark skinned does not by itself make you prone to vitamin D deficiency unless you are living in regions of the world where there is reduced sunlight for some of the year (AUTUMN/FALL and WINTER) or because you spend most of your time indoors.
PEOPLE OF COLOUR (BLACKS, ASIANS) LIVING IN THE WEST (NORTH AMERICA, NORTHERN EUROPE) ARE THE ONES AT HIGHEST RISK OF DEVELOPING VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY DURING THESE LOW SUNLIGHT MONTHS. This is why regular intake of vitamin D3 IS ADVISED FOR PEOPLE OF COLOUR ALL YEAR-ROUND OR AT LEAST DURING FALL/ATUMN AND WINTER.
Lots of Ghanaians and other Africans have very low blood vitamin D because many do LONG-TERM NIGHT SHIFT WORK which means that during the day they are asleep even during the summer months and don't get out and about much in the sun during the daytime hours.
The other important point to note is that it is almost impossible to get all your vitamin D requirements from food alone. Sunlight remains by far the number one ultimate source of vitamin D.
Most Ghanaians who are out and about do not need Vitamin D supplements. For many the problem is getting adequate calcium supplementation especially for the older age group (but care must be taken here because people taking too much calcium can get kidney or salivary stones especially if they get dehydrated) .
