Emergency care is a fundamental responsibility of the medical profession. While we recognize that healthcare systems may be under pressure — facing staffing shortages, administrative burdens, and funding challenges — these realities cannot become excuses for failing to provide basic, life-saving care to a fellow human being.
At its core, medicine is about humanity. When a critically injured person is turned away without appropriate intervention, it raises serious ethical and professional concerns. Overstretch, fatigue, or systemic strain do not negate the duty to assess, stabilize, and ensure safe onward care. These are not optional standards; they are foundational obligations.
This situation should not be normalized or dismissed as an unfortunate consequence of resource limitations. It warrants transparency, investigation, and accountability. If protocols were not followed, those responsible must be held to account. If systemic failures contributed, those too must be addressed with urgency and reform.
Healthcare exists to serve people at their most vulnerable. Anything less than that is unacceptable.
This is an indictment on us as a nation
