Mislabeled horsemeat not in Ghana yet - FDB assures

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority has allayed fears of Ghanaian consumers that mislabeled horsemeat products may have also slipped into Ghana just as has happened in twelve European countries.

It has sparked widespread concerns about the possible extent to which the horsemeat products could have spread across the world.

Food safety experts from across Europe are currently meeting in Brussels to address the horsemeat scandal.

On Thursday, the French government suspended the licence of processing firm Spanghero, saying it had "knowingly" sold horsemeat as beef.

Authorities here in Ghana say the current scandal shouldn’t frighten people who don’t consume horsemeat since such a product is not on the Ghanaian market.

The Head of the Food Inspectorate Department of the Food and Drugs Authority, Kofi Essel, in an interview with XYZ News said his outfit is on the alert to ensure that products on the market are properly labeled.
