The Ministry of Health has launched a new initiative to tackle maternal mortality, following a directive by President John Dramani Mahama to save the lives of expecting mothers in the country.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, in a statement on August 17, 2026, said the government views the reduction of maternal deaths as both a moral imperative and a shared national responsibility.
Ghana’s maternal mortality ratio declined by 75.2% between 2000 and 2023
She emphasised that President Mahama’s conviction is driving renewed efforts to make maternal health a national priority.
"This sad reality is driving the renewed national effort led by President John Dramani Mahama through the Ministry of Health to help address this and save the lives of mothers," Dr Ayensu-Danquah said.
"...President Mahama, as a father and leader of our nation, has been unequivocal on this issue: no woman should lose her life while giving life," she added.
The statement further added that the initiative, known as the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Plan (MMARP), is designed to accelerate the reduction of maternal deaths across the country.
