'Some' of these kids we're trying to recruit to Ghana are very, very materialistic--to say the least- with instant gratification syndrome than the kids in Ghana. They are also opinionated ( which most Ghanaians can't stand.) A kid working at McDonald fast food joint in the States can easily make $9-11 an hour.So National service program with peanuts salary is not going to entice them ,not to mention other social deficiencies in Ghana.
We need to cross our T's and dot our I's if we want the program to work.We need to go back to the drawing board and fix the bugs first.

Post retirement national service will be more feasible and realistic!
Any body who has lived abroad before knows why people get stuck and fine it hard to even visit home.
The main obstacle is the financial commitments one gets entangled into.
The 21 to 30 year old would have already incurred student loans, credit card loans, rented apartments, bought cars, etc. These commitments would require them to do real work and earn real income where they made those commitments. It is therefore not realistic to expect those kids to come to Ghana to do national service. Exposing them to reality of Ghana living that early will probably discourage them from ever returning home. It doesn't make sense.
If there are any jobs for diasporan youth in Ghana those jobs should be given to local youth so they don't have to cross the Sahara to Europe.
Everybody makes mistakes but for public officials to make mistakes like this is extremely disappointing.

Good day my brother, I totally agree with you. We should not frustrate the President Nana Addo on non-prioritised issues.Ghana National Service does not provide reliably elements which will help to develop Mama Ghana. No one in the Diaspora will send his/children to Ghana for National Service. Let's talk about developemnt schèmes. Goverment could consider introducing VSO/PEACE CORPS and Ghana Executive Overseas Service(GEOS). Employees of this institutions will earn monies abroad, and invest in Ghana. The late President Mill had made the proposition for the establishment of GEOS; unfortunately nothing materialised. Do we need National Service?

This is great idea.In fact, this is the best idea so far I ever have heard from any government of Ghana. But I have another fear and resrvation.Since these young kids grew up outside Ghana and are used to good work ethics--no cutting corners,goofing- off and working on lottery numbers during working hours. If they stay here long enough and spend time with their co-workers they will be infected with the bad Ghanaian work ethic which is very lousy. And, that will defeat the purpose of the program. I'm sure part of the goal is to let these young kids outside to taste the Ghanaian culture and all the trimmings with the hope that they will one day decide to move to Ghana in the future.Don't laugh because I know what I'm saying .I have been here for 7 years and have over 30 people on my payroll .Is terrible.I don't want the Diaspora kids to copy them. The native Ghanaians will laugh at them if they see the diaspora kids work without looking at the clock. Ghanaians want to work as little as they can just to get their paychecks and keep their jobs. They don't want to go any extra miles for their employers. No wonder ,there are no good jobs.

Bright idea but bound to fail, because, they have not involved the so-called prospective national service personnel or their parents in their planning. I bet you, I am the only one who can convince my kids to come and work in Ghana, thus, if I promise to supplement their earnings. What Ghana needs is to change our working culture and do away with BIGMANNISM. No American kid will allow those bosses to toss them around, so be aware.

The government has a penchant for pedantics regarding involving Ghanaians in the diaspora but it is all chatter and empty rhetoric. For 30 years, we have had a white American as the Ghana Honorary Consul to Houston when we have very qualified people like Kwame who could better do the job of promoting foreign investment in Ghana. The Consul's job is not only about issuing visas but creating trading relationships for Ghana and in that regard, the current Consul has failed abysmally.
Besides running to Ghana every 3 months to ingratiate himself with the officials and singing their praises to ensure that he keeps the job, he doesn't really do much. To add insult to injury, not a single Ghanaian works or has ever worked in his office. And now he has his grandchildren working over there as he physically does not do any of the work.Is the Consul job a dynasty to be passed on from generation to generation? And what is he hiding by excluding Ghanaians from working at his office? We appreciate his service but 30 years is enough as we have enough qualified Ghanaians in Houston with the advantage of understanding the culture and economic dynamics of the country who can do a better job. And you should never discount the intangible benefit of patriotism and loyalty to one's place of birth, no matter how long one has been away. The current Consul's loyalty when push comes to shove is to the USA and not to Ghana. He needs to go!

County Judge Ed Emmett has appointed Kwame B. Acheampong to the newly created Harris County International Advisory Council.
The core responsibility of the Advisory Council is to advice the County Judge and the Commissioners Court on economic development opportunities involving foreign countries and businesses.
Harris County is the largest county in terms of population - over four million and with enormous resources in the State of Texas and the fourth largest county in the United States.
Kwame, a long-time resident of Harris County brings to the Advisory Council an experience in international business development. He is a businessman and expert in public policy and local government development.
He has previously served in a similar capacity for Harris County by promoting small to medium-sized businesses in Harris County, the Gulf Region of Mexico and The Caribbean.
He also served as Ghana’s Trade and Investment Representative to the United States under Ministry of Trade & Industry, Private Sector Development and President’s Special Initiatives during President Kufuor’s government. He has for 16 years served as an Adjunct Professor of Government at the Houston Community College.
The Harris County International Advisory Council envisions to expand trade missions abroad from Harris County and its neighboring counties while effectively interacting with foreign delegations that visit the county which includes City of Houston.
”I will endeavor to leverage my presence on the Council to promote Ghana as an attractive investment destination to the numerous CEOs and business executives I will have the privilege of interacting with.
Houston is the energy capital of the world and Harris County has a strong medical research and aerospace technology presence, as well as the third largest port in the United States and I believe all of these will present some opportunistic synergies for Ghana”, according to Mr. Acheampong.
Kwame is a graduate of Rice University and the prestigious Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
