Thank God our soldiers are safe in Mali. We must not recoil into our shells but continue to help stabilize Africa.
Nevertheless, I think the AU has much more to do to ensure their security. Africa needs a concerted Continent-wide close surveillance of violent rebellious and even terrorizing groups to quell before hurting innocent people, and plunging the Continent into disarray.
It is time we formed the African High Command that could be deployed in haste to eliminate any group of terrorists on the Continent. We cannot and should not depend on NATO or even the UN Peacekeeping apparatus to do that. By the time we bring in the Peacekeepers, some huge damage could have been done already, as was in the case of Boko Haram.
We cannot sit by and watch hundreds of people slaughtered under false pretense of Religion and political competition or opposition only to send in the Peacekeeping Force under disadvantaged conditions. The non-interference principle among our States must be overridden by the imperative to stop such heinous activities in any country. We might be faced with situations where incumbent Administrations could be the savage culprit, and any intervention by the African High Command taken to be illegal interference. But the circumstances under which the Command would be deployed could be definitively stipulated by the consensus of the AU.
