For the long generation of electricity renewable energy is only alternative. Solar power is one example. Ghana has sun energy in abundance. Secondly, wind power ask the Germans for advice to only name these two sources of energy which are sustainable.

Renewable energy like wind power and solar is good but too expensive comparatively, unfortunately that is what we should be thinking and not coal power plant.

NDC hate Ekumfi people. They have killed your Atta Mills and it seems that is not enough for these NDC con men.
Coal will produce black smogin your sky. These smog will produce acidic rains to destroy your crops. These NDC crooks have idea what they are doing. Please, people of Ekumfi should reject this killer project. We should reject these thieves so that we can get some fine men to govern Ghana.

I release the woman lives in the USA where there are thousands of Coal powered plants and there is no dumsor. Like everything else, the coal technology has improved by heaps and bounds. I agree Nuclear power would have been the best technology going forward, however coal powered station using clean coal technology is age appropriate for Ghana's journey going forward. There is plenty of coal around- even in Africa to fuel those plants. I salute VRA for making a bold decision to move us forward in this crazy energy crises we find ourselves

We should be producing local solar technology to fill the gap. If the president gives legon $10m to research into Solar panels, I can assure you they will come up with effective systems

Wind is the better option than coal, after all, most of the countries into coal are all trying to leave that dirty source of energy and we who don't even have the resource unless we import at serious cut - throat cost to the Ghanaian tax payer, are thinking myopically of constructing coal fired energy plant ? How stupid can that be ? very stupid indeed.
We have better options to , create endless sources of energy and that we can find in wind in abundance across the coastal belt of Ghana and solar which we can easily harness to solve a massive deficit of energy in our system , rather than relying on tried and tested and expensive sources of energy that , not only pollutes and destroys our already messed up environment . cost alone to posterity cannot be maintained nor paid for, and the only solution therein , will be to auction off Ghana to pay our debts if we continue in this direction ad infinitum.

That cannot be said of ours why should we try and throw hundreds of millions of USD into a pit latrine like a coal energy when the resource will be always imported at expensive cut - throat costs to the country and posterity? Why are we this stupid as a people at all? Why are our leaders so criminally minded to the extent that, they will recommend even SHIT for us all as an antidote for mosquito bites if the a dodgy business man were to propose it to them for a massive bribe as it seems has been the case here.

Nana Afenyi VI's lamentation about the health hazards of coal fired plants is well placed. However it needs further clarifications. Coal poses a heath risk when coal dust and coal particles are stirred up during the mining process, as well as the soot released during coal transport, which can cause severe and potentially deadly respiratory problems. To my knowledge, coal will not be mined in the country as it will be imported. This to a certain extent minimizes the health risks posed by coal. On the other hand, coal-fired power plants tend to pollute the air more than any energy producing source.

You also forgot to mention, you are burdening national resources and potential investments into other sectors by incurring a huge import bill. The opportunity cost is very large.

Sometimes I wonder what in God's name is wrong with our thinking caps. Has anybody heard that the US, JAPAN are floating solar panels on barges on dams, rivers , lakes etc ? Since the nuclear disaster in Japan, the country has been developing floating solar barges on every available lake, river, ponds etc. Interestingly, the solar panels operate better on water using the cooling effect of water whilst additionally minimizing evaporation of the water. Take VRA, the dams catchment area can easily accommodate up to 200MW power supply which can be connected directly onto the grid saving evaporation . The cost of 1.5 billion coal plant with its importation of coal which we don't mine, will be additional import cost which if VRA which is already cash strapped will leave the plant a monumental white elephant. Let us think and think seriously about keeping and maintaining a clean environment. Nothing is as sweet as waking up to an early morning sweet smell of clean air.

Did I hear that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in collaboration with the Volta River Authority (VRA) held a public forum to assess the environmental impact of the proposed coal-fired power plant at Ekumfi Aboano.
The forum, held in the Ekumfi District, was attended by Chiefs, opinion leaders and the inhabitants of the five coastal communities that would be affected by the project.
The communities are Aboano, Immuna, Otuam-Kontankore, Kokodo and Sarfa-Npoano. These are poor communities with high rate of illiterates. How can they contribute to such environmental issues? Why was this not done in Accra or Kumasi or even cape Coast where citizens who are abreast with environmental issues could debate the impact of this power generation to the lives of these poor communities. When it was time to send their industrious son President Mills to Ekumfi Otuam for burial, the power that be chose to bury him in Accra. I believed the coal industry must also be cited in Accra. Ekumfi is not ready or settle for such environmental hazards

As a mother of the women and children in the beautiful Otuam village under King Peggy's leadership as King, I am deeply concerned. China halted production of Coal-fired plants in their own country earlier this year as they are the world's biggest emitters of greenhouse gases. They are looking to switch to solar energy. The NYTimes and other US papers reported about this in April of this year. Imagine thick billowing black and gray smoke. Everyone wearing masks. Contaminated water impacting the fishing industry. Respatory issues of the residents and small children. High instances of Asthma. Smut covering homes, trees and the land. Hazy skies. The answer is No! Britain called for closing of these plants in Liverpool Perserve this land for generations. No coal firing plants are welcomed in Ghana!
