2020: NDC will rise – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will emerge more fortified and unified after the political party is done with the implementation of the recommendations of the Professor Kwesi Botchwey Committee.

The party, following its electoral loss to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has seen it return to opposition, set up a 13-member committee led by former Finance Minister Professor Botchwey, to look into the factors for its defeat.

Mr Mahama who was speaking at the 36th commemoration of the 31st December revolution in Ho indicated on Sunday that the NDC “will rise again” having learnt the lessons from their defeat in the 2016 polls.

He further commended leadership of the party for rolling out a national registration exercise and called on all supporters of the NDC to embrace mechanisms being implemented to rebuild the party.

On his part, former President Jerry John Rawlings who lead the 31st December 1981 revolution, called for an overhaul of the party in order to achieve any electoral victory to roll out policies for the benefit of Ghanaians.

“The NDC needs men and women at its various Executive positions who have the strength of character to boldly lead the party and ensure that they have the ability to rein in members of their own government when in power. Our party structure was weak, abused and ignored in the immediate past and when change comes that change must be one that carries with it the power and will of the people. If we do not allow that revolutionary change but allow materialism and money politics to dictate our choices, then we will stay in the political abyss for a considerable period,” he cautioned.
