The Greater Accra Regional Campaign Coordinator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah and a former Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah have been accused of sabotaging former President John Dramani Mahama during the 2016 elections.

Mr Mensah and Dr Spio-Garbrah, according to a group calling itself NDC Action Movement, succeeded in making Mahama unpopular to the electorate just cause his defeat so that they could get the chance to contest the flagbearer slot on the ticket of the party in the 2020 elections.

Supporting this claim at a press briefing in Accra Wednesday, Spokesperson for the group, Kodzo Hamenya Keglo said, the former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority was in a hurry to get rid of former President Mahama, thus, deliberately made polling agents go to collation centres without the necessary logistics.

“We want Sylvester to tell us why his administrators went to collation centres with bare hands whiles the NPP in opposition came to centres with five laptops for each constituency with modems and other gadgets. No wonder after 24 hours we claim we’re in comfortable lead. Whiles the NPP has finished collating the results, we’re still collating, and I know even till today we’re collating,” Mr. Keglo said.

The group added that Spio-Garbrah had no right to tell the world how “broken” the NDC has become after days in opposition when his interest was paramount to him than the party’s.

“Why won’t the NDC be broken when Spio was following JM in 2016 outdooring himself for 2020 instead of campaigning for JM? These are the people who have let down the NDC. Instead of helping JM, Spio was rather sinking JM for his 2020 presidential interest,” Keglo noted.

The cracks in NDC appear to be deepening after the party lost the 2016 elections to the NPP. Tension continues to mount in the NDC as some supporters of the party are pointing accusing fingers at some party members and leaders for their actions and inactions which led to the party’s defeat in the last elections.

Meanwhile, former President, John Mahama has taken responsibility for the party’s defeat and has asked party members to remain calm and work toward victory in 2020.
