Let us hope the authorities will take the matter seriously on this occasion. They have indeed been approaching the issue lackadaisically.

I found the introduction about countries without armies quite interesting - they all seem to be islands and I can understand why. I also see the parallel between the intro and the main piece on the effects of mining.
I do wish you had spent more time explaining the effects of mercury and how we are exposed to it through illegal mining. Nonetheless, this is a good start to look for additional information to supplement what you have given us. Thank you!

I used to work with a guy from Costa Rica and one day, I asked him why his nation has no army. He said that they use to have it but some sensible politicians saw how some nation are being destabilized by the military through coups, thought it wise to put and end to their. So, in Costa Rica, it is the police that has power. Do you hear any negative news coming from that nation in central America?
The military we have in Ghana is too large and their budget is a huge drain on our scanty resources. We should find a way to disarm them and put a death nail in their coffin. If not, we should allow them to sit at the barracks and wait for a war in a distant land to act.
They should be deployed to fight armed robbers, illegal mining etc. The later is more than an invading army because it is destroying our forest and all our water bodies. We should remember that "water is life and there is no substitution for it.
The earlier we act, the better because we cannot import water to meet our basic need and can you imagine a situation like importation of water?

I do agree with you on the size of the military in Ghana--although I can see people arguing our "democracy" is too young to reduce its size. Apart from peace-keeping missions, where Ghana contributes a sizable army (mainly to sustain the army itself in my opinion), what else does the military in Ghana do? I ask out of ignorance.

How did the Chinese get to the Birim, Offin, Pra & Tano river areas to destroy the farms and pollute the rivers? How did their dozers, excavators & heavy equipments get to the sites all the way from China? Where were the Chiefs, MMDCES, the Police, also where was Rawlings, Kuffuor, Mills, Mahama & now Akufo-Addo when the Chinese paid heavy sums of money to destroy our lands? If anybody needs get arrested it is not the poor hardworking Chinese immigrant. Arrest the corrupt Ghanaian leadership & Galamsey will die. Who is willing EOCO or the police or military who raid the operators for their own benefit? Sleep, my brother, the morning will come!

I have been wondering weather it shear ignorance or we have just refused to use our brains for thinking. The activities of these Chinese illegal miners goes beyond domestic activity. I believe that is the reason our leaders can't fight it holistically. Ghana as a country eaten her cake long ago even before the cake was made.
Chinese grants, Chinese scholarships and other Chinese aid -the illegal Chinese mining is the pay back for those grants.
We should assumed when when they were coming down here they've informed their government about the agenda. They goes back to China also means our Chinese aids will be cut and maybe I emphasized on the maybe the number of Ghanaians in China is far more the number of Chinese down here. From my perspective this is an international issue and should be tackled internationally.
But here is where our talking coward politicians decided decide to play hide and seek with it.
By the way who said the Chinese illegal miners are private organization, if the Chinese government can infiltrate the American industry then how much more Ghana.
We have a very long way to go.
Let us hope the authorities will take the matter seriously on this occasion. They have indeed been approaching the issue lackadaisically.
