This is what you get when you put people who do NOT understand modern day economics at the helms of society. What is going on clearly demonstrate how corrupt our Ghanaian institutional Leaders have become. Most of our institutional leaders in the Army, Police, Politicians and the Judiciary have already compromised their positions by accepting bribes in the form of Prime Lands from these traditional leaders. Those who have not got their parcels of land yet are already on their knees begging for their share. They have all been bought. A plot of land at Nungua Spintex is selling for nearly $80,000 ( Eighty Thousand US dollars ) and yet the only public toilets in Nungua sre the 3 built by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. All these corrupt chiefs do is see the land and use the proceeds to buy big cars and lure young girls. The sad case is Most of these chiefs don’t even know what their poor children eat.

However to say that such practices should be acceptable in other cultures as against the Nungua culture is unbelievable especially when you are using the law against such practices.

What is good for the goose is also good for the gander and obnoxious cultural practices no matter which culture must be subordinate to the Ghana law if we should all be equal before the law.

Brother Kotey: Your points are well taken. However, the posting was not about the merits and demerits of Ghanaian traditions. Instead, it was about defrauding the Government and the public with falsehood, going round and inviting former heads of state and citizens to a funeral under the pretext that the corpse would be brought and laid in state, when the corpse had actually been buried for more than a year now.

Apart from being totally misleading, deceptive, unproductive, and making us Gas an object of ridicule in the eyes of our fellow Ghanaians, the announcement goes on to put a ban on social activities and businesses, curbing people's rights to make their livelihood and violating fundamental rights of all Ghanaians in the affected areas. I don't know how we can overlook the wrongfulness at play here.

Regarding the need for laws that apply uniformly to all Ghanaians, I am with you, and I do concur that such is the ideal proposition. However, it is not practicable where tradition and culture are at issue. Cultural practices evolve and get established over the years. The Ashantis have evolved and developed their culture on how they handle funerals, as have the Fantes, the Ewes, the Hausas, the Gas, etc. These cultural practices were established way, way, long before you and I were born. Nungua's culture never comprised the aspects of the Ashantis' practices at issue here, and to copy-cat those cultural practices just because the Ashantis recently followed them as they customarily do is infantile, disingenuous, and worrisome. Of course, if any cultural practices of any group is developmentally oriented, Nungua can progressively embrace it. But what is contemplated here is the opposite inasmuch as it stalls business, it propagates falsehood about burial of a Corpse that has been buried long ago, and it arrogates to the runners the power to impose curfew on people in Nungua and its environs, egregiously threatening and violating citizens' fundamental rights. Clearly, the reprehensibility of the curfew, etc., is unspeakable: it simply cannot and should not be condoned. We can certainly have a memorial celebration to honor our Wulomo that now belongs to the Ages, but the way we want to do it is simply not right.

One thing we must all understand here is the Gborbu Wulomo is not just any person but the overlord of the Ga-Dangbe state a position same as the Asantehene so he needs to be given a respectful burial. The fact that he has been buried already so the is no need fr this funeral does not hold any water. Our Muslim brothers bury their dead the same day but the funeral rites r done 40 days later. This curfew is not the first nungua will be experiencing because during the homowo festival, there is a Thursday nite curfew. Ga's should learn to respect our cultures and traditions so other tribes would stop looking down on us. Mr. Writer you and I know the reason why there is no curfew in the Ga state when a chief dies. Chiefs have no authority on the land it is the wulomo who has the power over ther land. If you do not know you history then please do not misinform us.
