This is for the records. The Kufuor Government awarded the Fufulso-Sawla road on contract to three Ghanaian contractors: Adom, Cymain and P.W. Ghannem. I was at Damongo when the Minister for Roads, Richard Anane came to cut the sod for start of the construction in 2008. The project was suspended on the change in Government and it wad some time later when a Chinese Company was re-awarded the contract under the NDC. The project would have been completed long ago!

Sofo. Thank you. You are economically with the truth. The agitation for the Gonjaland region ceased because JM a Gonja nationalist became president of Ghana in 2012. Period. JM begged your youth leaders to stop the campaign. People like Dr. Mahama Haruna who was with the NPP crossed over to NDC with many Gonjas.
How can that single road bring development to we Gonjas in Salaga, Kpadai and the rest in the Eastern part of the NR?
Now that the Gonja nationalist JM is out of power the NDC Gonjas are trying to make life difficult for the NPP government.
When Nana Addo promised to create a region out of the Western region what did president Mahama say? He would create more regions should he win. Thank God he lost.
Those NDC Gonjas who made money under JM should give us a break.

The way we have huge administrative costs, new regions will be a financial disaster. Regional everything has to be built and lots of officers appointed with all their perks - houseboys, garden boys, government vehicles, etc.
If we spread development away from the regional capitals as the writer suggests, there will be no need for more regions.
Why can't the passport head office be in Koforidua?
Why can't the immigration head office be in Kumasi?
Why can't Electricity corp not have its hq in Cape Coast or Sunyani?
Why must everything be in Accra in an age when internet is bringing all of us together?

He is pursuing a vendetta against NDC and public servants perceived to be NDC sympathisers, instead of getting on with the business of running the country.
The ideas in the article are eminently sensible. Nana Addo would do well to read and digest this article, and stop his empty rhetoric about creating new regions.

Everything in Ghana is politic. The president should rather be talking about sanitation and the gross indiscipline that is actively destroying the country.
Every street and pavement has turned into market place yet the leaders looks the other way.
I just don't know when Ghana will find a leader who will not make his stomach his God.

First of all, I would like to correct the impression by my dear brother Nicholas that the construction of the Sawla-Damongo-Fufulso road has assuaged any agitation by the inhabitants Gonjaland for the creation of a separate region. The sudden silence for this genuine quest for a region could probably be as a result of having a Gonja as a president hence the hope that it was going to be addressed somehow.
Roads construction is just an integral part for the needs of any community in Ghana and therefore does not seal the demand for another region. What has to be factored in the quest for new regions includes primarily ,administrative convinience that brings good governance to the doorstep of the people.
It should be noted that, certainl parts of a vast region as the northern region does not see the visitation of the regional minister over a period of 4 years; the Kulor or Abrumase enclave is a classical example. Travelling to Abrumase takes a whole day since one has to cross the volta lake and travel for almost 100km. The salaga district which hosts the Abrumase enclave his bigger than the upper east region. A native of Abrumase travelling to the Regional capital Tamale therefore needs 3days to make a return trip.
People similarly residing in Bamboi have to travel about 400 km through Sawla-Damongo-Fufulso to see Tamale. These are some of the challenges that necessarily precipitate the agitation for more regions.
We should also note that the northern region is bigger than countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Mauritius, The Gambia etc. We should therefore look at the convinience that is engendered by the splitting up some regions.

Very insightful write up worth the attention and action of the powers that be. I think it perfectly answers the critical question of whether the creation of new regions is necessary or not.
However, the rationale for creation of new regions is politically rather than developmentally motivated. Thus, the president and his government have their minds already made up on the matter, hence the appointment of a minister of state to prosecute the agenda. Also, as a political campaign pledge, they will go all length to get it implemented in order to make political capital out of it so as to win more votes during the next election to perpetuate themselves in power.
So the government will hardly listen to the voice of reason such as espoused in this piece and the commission to be set up will likely be made up of people who will pander to the whims and caprices of the president and his government.

This is a brilliant and intelligent write up . May the writer try his very best to rally for people in the affected regions and the country at large to "buy in" with this campaign so that the govt will rescind it's decision on this wrong priority for creation of regions. This is really going to put more financial burden on the state because regional ministers and deputies and the like will be appointed. Etc . please continue to educate the President on this matter seriously .Thanks so much.

Very concise and brilliant piece from Nicholas Issaka Gbana.
At the core of this lack of development or deprivation within some of these regions I believe has to do most importantly with the aspect of spatial planning.
Can somebody walK right now to say the Northern region which has been proposed to be divided, to the Regional Coordinating Council and the Planning Department and ask to see, the spatial pLanning of the whole region, from the ground up-the drainage system, the water distribution system, the power distribution system, waste system, where schools from daycare to universities will be sited, hospitals will be sited, security infrastructure have been sited, residencies, businesses, offices, of a modern contemporary region comparable to the infrastructure of any advanced or developed country which has been planned from the ground up? So a gov't comes in, an investor comes in and wan tea to address any of the zoned spatial plan of the region he just goes in there and starts development and in the case of the investor, gets his approval to construct or develop his high rise offices, manufacturing unit, all already planned to a T?
The issue is not about the creation of regions but about excellent planning and execution based off of a very detailed template from the ground up and the commitment of resources to drive development devoid of political partisanship.
The concerns that have necessitated the creation of these new regions is basically one of partisanship and has nothing to do with its necessity triggered by the marginalization of segments of the Ghanaian society within some parts of these regions based on their voting patterns. That is the long and short of it and ethnic and tribal sentiments dating back ages.
Ghanaians want well planned regions of which we have the experts to spatially draw every single region as to how we want it to look like in 20, 30, 40 years time like how the sandy desert of Dubai has been transformed in 40 years after the discovery of oil.
This is what Ghanaians need and jobs, and the peace and security to pursue their interests in prosperity.
There are Ghanaians, surveyors, planners etc who were involved in the planning of the Federal capital territory of Nigeria-Abuja. There are Ghanaians involved in the transformation of Dubai. They are everywhere and that is what resources must be committed to achieve, the excellent spatial planning of each region, zoned to the micro level for development and not the creation of new regions.

The present day Ghana, is the creation of THE ALMIGHTY GOD Himself. It is NOT EVEN the creation of of our First President in the human form. But, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who forever is the ONLY , AND ONLY ONE humble enough for THE LORD to use for His PLAN FOR ALL AFRICA, AND ALL THE DESCENDANTS spread across this wicked WORLD [through SLAVERY] that SATAN is RULING.
The Volta Region as it was formally, PART OF TOGO. Then , known as TRANS- VOLTA TOGOLAND , prior to THE 1956 UNITED NATIONS PLEBISCITE.
IT WAS ONE, AND ONLY ONE UNIT BLOCK, but NOT TWO .
IT WAS THE WILL OF THE ALMIGHTY, GOD for the Volta Region to be part of the new creation of Ghana !
For the new President to DIVIDE THE VOLTA REGION INTO TWO,is against THE SECOND MOVE OF THE ALMIGHTY IN AFRICA!
The move is NOT HUMANLY KNOWN, BUT SATAN knows. THIS IS WHY SATAN is using someone to block THIS SECOND MOVE.
Though, the President , himself does NOT KNOW , he is being used by Satan for the simple reasons of BOTH :
1. Political Expediency.
2. Peripheral Hegemony.
All these are SPIRITUAL, and ONLY THOSE anointed by The Lord, Almighty will be empowered to know.
Please, those who have access to the President MUST WARN him that he will go against The Almighty God when he divides the Volta Region into Two.
For , THE REPERCUSSIONS ARE MORE THAN ANY HUMAN BEING, AND ANY ONE REGION CAN BEAR !
