"What at all is it about doctoral degrees, including a Ph.D., that makes (Dr.) Kudalor so desperate to be addressed as such?"
This, in a larger context, is the crux of the whole problem. It is not only about being addressed as "Dr". It is about our pathological need to be addressed in ways that we think put us above our fellow citizens. People who claim to have two PhDs want to be addressed "Dr Dr" so they are above those with only one "Dr". It is only in our country that "Rev Dr", "Rev Prof" mean sooo much that not addressing the holders by such titles is a serious breach of "protocol" or breaking some unwritten les majeste laws.
So Obinim too is "Rev Dr".
Those of us who have lived several decades in Western Europe where people will look at you with embarrassment if you introduce yourself as "Dr" something find it all ridiculous.
The IGP now has a problem. After boasting so long with his "improper" PhD title, he cannot now retreat with the tail between his legs and say he's no longer "Dr". The embarrassment will be too much. It would be easier if it were an honorary Dr he was laying claim too. It would also be easier if he was retired.
Now this letter is asking the newspapers not to go along with this charade. The newspapers can do a lot to reduce the problem but their editors are also enmeshed in the problem. They simply don't know what to do as the problem is bigger than the IGP.
But the call to probe if the IGP got his present position by the use of the improper academic qualification is a good one. A few prominent examples need to be made - the IGP and the USPA prof who got two PhDs in three years. If the fight is not relentless, the charlatans will win of the genuine guys...

More than 30 fake universities have been shut down by the Government following a crackdown on worthless degrees, it has emerged.
However, the UK is powerless to act against roughly 80 per cent of offenders because they are based outside the country and cannot be prosecuted, according to Prospects, the graduate careers expert.
Last year, Prospects Higher Education Degree Datacheck (HEDD) was commissioned to reduce the number of unaccredited institutions by increasing prosecutions after a website in China was selling degree certificates from dozens of UK universities for ?500 each.
As the project starts its second year, it will focus on dealing with offenders at a local level through international collaboration with the equivalent authorities overseas, HEDD said.
Degree fraud has become a serious concern in recent years with recent evidence showing there are 190 bogus universities offering fake degree certificates.
Tackling degree fraud
Jayne Rowley, director for Prospects HEDD said: “We’ve made incredible progress over the last year, developing a shutdown process with law enforcement agencies and making alliances overseas, so we’re in a good place to make a bigger impact on offenders based outside our legal system.
“With the onset of the internet and distance learning degree fraud is a borderless crime and we must collaborate with agencies around the world to deal with it.
"We also need to get people thinking more about prevention.
"We’ve developed free toolkits for higher education providers and employers to help them develop policies on tackling degree fraud.”
As part of the project Prospects has been raising awareness of degree fraud. Degree verification through HEDD has increased 16 per cent year-on-year.
More than 116,000 checks and a total of 220 bogus institutions have been officially identified since the service launched in 2011, figures showed.

where and when is this going to stop? If the Chief of Police for the country is in cahoots with the crooks and imposters then who takes care of the wrongs in the nation?
