This is a brilliant piece. It is long overdue that drainage in our cities should be a major priority. A start has to be made and it takes a courageous leader to do this. It requires massive capital to plan and implement. Perhaps we should start by setting up a technical committee of experst to draw up a plan that should be implemented in stages.

Siltation is frequent and you say we should cover drains? Chec our culture. Check our capability. Are you sure of this practice will help us. Kaneshie drains are covered. They are difficult to access to maintain. Hence the constant flooding. They are full of SH_IT AND FEACES. WRITER MUST COME AGAIN

I often muse over the perennial flooding and drainage system in Accra and our other big cities and towns and have often engaged in fruitless discussions about the seemingly helplessness of the situation with friends where I live. The solution is not rocket science so one is left to wonder what our national priorities are. Where's the vision ; where is the plan? I lived in Accra in the early sixties to the mid seventies and I can say without any reservations that flooding in the capital city is predictable and always occurs in the same parts of the city. It looks as if no one cares. Why is it that Kenya, another African nation, has underground sewerage systems while they are non-existent in Ghana? What's going on in Ghana and does anyone care at all about the perennial flooding and how much it costs the nation yearly in human life, epidemics, property, business, etc? We are just a bunch of jokers. Nobody is accountable to anyone, from the President to the office messenger. The big men in the nation are only interested in living big off Ghanaians whilst millions of their fellow citizens live in poverty, filth and squalor. No one seems to care.

I DO NOT KNOW THE PERCENTAGE OF OUR CITIZENS WHO TRAVELED OR LIVED OVERSEAS. MOST OF OUR ENGINEERS HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING BESIDE OPEN DRAINS, AS SUCH THEY CONTINUE TO REPEAT THE COLONIAL TYPE OF SEWAGE AND STORM WATER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. MOST MINISTERS ARE TRAINED IN LIBERAL ARTS AND WILL NOT APPRECIATE MODERN METHODS OF FLOOD PREVENTION. MAINTENANCE IS NOT OUR FORTE. GO AROUND AND INSPECT THE TOILETS IN MANY OFFICES AND YOU WILL WONDER THE HOPELESSNESS OF THE SITUATION. JUST LOOK AROUND AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. OUR MINISTERS WILL RUN TO OTHER NICE CITIES FOR THEIR HOLIDAYS BUT CARE LESS OF OUR OWN. LOOK AT THE ENTRANCE TO OUR ACCRA TEMA MOTORWAY AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. I WENT FOR THE MAIN POST OFFICE FOR MY PARCEL AND YOU WILL SEE THAT THE BUILDING NEVER SAW PAINT FOR A LONG TIME. WE LIKE FLASHY THINGS BUT FILTH IS NOT ONE OF THEM. ACCRA DOES NOT HAVE DRAINAGE AND SEWAGE PLANS AS IN OTHER COUNTRIES. ALL WE KNOW IS OPEN GUTTERS ALONG ROADS ARE OUR STORM WATER MANAGEMENT. WE NEED A NEW MENTALITY REGARDING STORM WATER MANAGEMENT, DOMESTIC AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE DISPOSAL PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION.

I do recall that long, long time ago, during the short rein of Dr. Busia, a bold attempt was made to modernise Accra's drainage. Immediately his government was overthrown, as has always been the case, all the good ideas of that government were also 'overthrown'.
So sad that for some of our people if you are not the one with the responsibility to solve a particular problem you dare not speak your mind about it.
