Millennium targets
Improving education would produce "long-term economic gains that are going to be phenomenal", says Mr Schleicher.
If Ghana, the lowest ranked country, achieved basic skills for all its 15-year-olds, the report says that it would expand its current GDP by 38 times, over the lifetime of today's youngsters.

When it comes to matters concerning teachers, everybody wants to say something against them. Do we take the trouble to research into both the good and the bad parts of their actions? We mustn't forget that some school children need more time to practice the same thing over and over again than others need. Yes, circuit supervisors must do well to compel their teachers to do what is expected of them, but that doesn't mean all pupils will get the same level of knowledge. Can we conclude that parents who employ the services of private teachers for their wards at home are killing their kids or themselves? No normal person will be delighted to train a person to go and fail in his field. Allow teachers to do what they think is best for their students. The best the Education Ministry could do is to regulate the conduction of extra classes; not to abolish it.

i would have agreed with many of the comments here if i have never taught before. However, after five years in the classroom,i know better.
First of all, many parents rather come asking for extra classes because most of them have a busy schedule and would rather have the kids being taught after school than for the kids to be at home without supervision.
Secondly,we must recognise the differences in IQ level of the children. Consequently, teachers have to be careful and very thorough so as not to leave the weaker students behind.
Again, there is very little time to complete a very packed syllabus. This is evidenced by the fact that the students performed better when the SHS programme was extended to 4 years. The syllabus has to be shrunk or more time created for the students.
Lastly,we have new teachers who have been working for months without receiving any salary. Without the token they earn from extra classes how would they be even able to get to school to teach all these kids?
It is also disingenuous to claim teachers do not give their best during classroom hours. They give their all, except you find those kids attending extra classes performing better because of the extra practice time they get.
Let us be careful because it is these same teachers who have taught us to become responsible adults.
Assuming without admitting that these teachers are mainly looking to earn a few extra cedis by organising these classes, who will remember the extra hundred cedis he/she spent on their children when they have grown to become doctors,lawyers,e.t.c because of the solid foundation they had. Can you put a price on your child's future?

What the minister had wanted to say was this: "Stop charging for extra classes." This is not the first time teachers had felt the need to organise extra classes. When I was in middle school, and for several years both before and after I entered middle school, an indigene of my village who was a teacher in another district organised Saturday classes for Form Four pupils from Janary till the MSLC exams in August. And this he did Saturday after Saturday whether or not the substantive Form Four teacher was present. And how much did he earn for his efforts? Just the smiles that greeted the release of the MSLC results each first term: "Our school got 100% with 16 distinctions".
It is pathetic that teachers at a particular private school in my town are charging GHC3.00 per child for extra morning classes but skipping lectures from 11.00 am till 2.00 pm and coming back for after school classes. The irony of the whole matter is that those kids whose parents cannot afford the extra charges do not have a dog's chance of catching up with the lessons covered during the extra classes. because the teachers do not have the time to repeat lessons they have already taught a section of the class!
For these and other reasons, I believe it is proper the government is tackling this corrupt practice now in order to prevent the damage it is doing to our education.

these teachers are just as corrupt as our politicians stealing from the poor students with BS extra classes because of their greed and not lack of time. stop making students waste time taking notes written on the black board and provide the test books needed to cover each topic in the syllabus (students can take notes of key points on their own if they want to) and that will save a lot of time and prevent the BS corrupt practices by the teachers. Only the greedy and corrupt teachers will be offended by this directive.
